New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - Everything about Tuesday night's match up with the Worcester Tornadoes spelled disaster for the New Jersey Jackals. Worcester was the only team with a winning record against the Jackals this season, rain was threatening all night and starter Stuart Pomeranz was knocked out of the game in the fourth inning courtesy of a line drive off the forearm. Still, showing the resiliency that earned them a first-half Can-Am League title, the Jackals fought through and came away with a 7-3 win at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Prior to his painful exit, Pomeranz was looking rock solid in his second start of the season against the Tornadoes, at one point retiring eight straight batters and allowing just one earned run on four hits in four innings on the mound. That one run came on an RBI-double from Worcester designated hitter Nick Salotti in the fourth inning. The Tornadoes would get two more runs off left-hander Giuseppe Granitto in the fifth (one earned) when left fielder Vinny Pennell tagged to score on a sac fly, and when Jackals catcher Matt Lauderdale through the ball into left second baseman Jeff LaHair came in as well for the third Worcester run.
The Jackals found themselves playing match all night though. Trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, right fielder Quinn Stewart blasted a solo home run, his seventh of the season, to tie the game. Then, trailing 3-1 in the fifth, New Jersey calmly plated a pair of runs courtesy of a two-run single from first baseman Myron Leslie, tying the game once again. From that point on, it was all New Jersey.
Worcester starter Zach Zuercher was lifted after the fifth inning, despite having only allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out five batters. His replacement was right-hander Nick Conway (2-3) who promptly allowed two more Jackals runs. After Stewart reached on a single and third baseman Mike Scanzano was plunked with a pitch, second baseman Marcus Sanders and shortstop Mike DeJesus laced back-to-back RBI-singles to push the Jackals out in front for the first time, 5-3.
Worcester would use three more relievers right-handers Eddie Pena and Anthony Sullivan and left-hander Chris Anderson. Both Pena and Sullivan would allow a run each, one in the seventh on a Stewart sac fly, and one in the eighth on a sac fly from Sanders. Both hitters as well as Leslie would finish with two RBIs each, and three different Jackals had multi-hit games.
New Jersey right-hander Kevin Gunter (6-1) who fired two no-hit innings in the sixth and seventh innings earned the victory, tying him with Ted Serro for the second highest win total on the team. Right-hander Romas Hicks struck out the side in the eighth, making that six straight strikeouts for the fireballer; Seth Overbey shut the door in the ninth, allowing just one hit.
New Jersey and Worcester will continue their series tomorrow night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. The Jackals will send left-hander A.J. Wideman to the mound looking for his eighth win of the season, while right hander Chris Farley will take the ball for the Tornadoes. Joey Whelan will have the live call of the game at www.jackals.com with the pre-game show starting 10 minutes prior.
