Round Rock Express News Release
The Round Rock Jackalopes (25-29) completed a 3-2, come-from-behind win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes (18-34) thanks to 2B Drew Robinson's two-run homer in the seventh inning. The win was Round Rock's seventh straight at Dell Diamond.
Jackalopes LHP Adam Loewen (1-0, 9.00) earned the win in his Round Rock debut despite surrendering a run on a hit and two walks in the top of the seventh inning. Baby Cakes RHP Drew Steckenrider (0-1, 1.85) suffered the loss after giving up Robinson's two-run shot in the seventh.
Round Rock starter RHP Allen Webster was solid in five innings of work. He allowed just one run on four hits and four walks in five innings while striking out seven.
New Orleans jumped on the board in the first inning via a Steve Lombardozzi solo home run that just cleared the fence in left field. Fresh off a 44-day stint on the disabled list, Jackalopes 3B Will Middlebrooks evened the game with a towering home run to right field two frames later.
The Baby Cakes took a brief lead in a strange seventh inning. Loewen struck out C Carlos Paulino to kick off the frame. After Peter Mooney singled, a wild pitch allowed the infielder to take second base. Loewen recovered to strike out LF Chad Hinshaw before walking Lombardozzi. During the next at-bat, Loewen skipped another wild pitch past C Brett Hayes, ultimately resulting in a dead-ball interference call that allowed Mooney to score go-ahead run. After walking Telis, Loewen struck out DH Destin Hood to end the inning.
In the seventh, RF Preston Beck singled before Robinson stepped the plate and lined an 0-1 pitch onto the berm in right field, giving the Jackalopes the lead at 3-2. Round Rock RHP Jaye Chapman and closer RHP Preston Claiborne combined for two scoreless innings of relief to seal the series-opening win.
What Could Have Been Weekend at Dell Diamond continues on Friday for game two against the New Orleans Baby Cakes. Jackalopes RHP Eddie Gamboa (3-5, 7.86) is set to toe the rubber opposite Baby Cakes LHP Chris O'Grady (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is set of 7:05 p.m.
