FRESNO, Calif. - A six-run fifth inning sunk the Tacoma Rainiers (31-21) in a 12-9 series-opening loss to the Fresno Grizzlies (24-30) on Thursday night at Chukchansi Park.

The Rainiers offense generated nine runs on 11 hits and even collected a six-run frame of their own early in the game, but ultimately fell in the first of four games against the Grizzlies.

Center fielder Leonys Martin, left fielder Zach Shank, and first baseman Daniel Vogelbach filled the first three spots in the Rainiers lineup and all collected multiple hits. The trio combined to finish the night 6-for-13 with four runs, two extra-base hits, and three RBI.

Martin stroked a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning to put Tacoma on the board before Fresno responded with the tying run in the bottom of the frame.

RBI base knocks from Vogelbach, third baseman D.J. Peterson, and second baseman Danny Muno highlighted a six-run outburst from the Rainiers offense in the top of the third inning that rocketed the visitors out in front, 7-1.

However, the Grizzlies would go on to score nine unanswered runs over the next three innings to take their first lead of the night at 10-7. Tacoma scored twice in the top of the sixth to pull within one run, but Fresno retaliated with two of their own in the bottom of the frame to set the final score at 12-9.

Relievers Ryne Harper (1.0 IP) and Ryan Kelly (1.0 IP) tossed two scoreless frames for Tacoma at the end of the night while holding the Grizzlies to just one hit.

The Rainiers and Grizzlies return to action on Friday with first pitch again scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PT. Tacoma will start right-hander Chase De Jong (2-2, 5.06), while Fresno turns to righty Casey Coleman (2-3, 6.67).
