Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - In the two previous meetings between both teams, the Missouri Mavericks and Quad City Mallards had the game decided by one goal. Thursday night's affair would not be as close, but the Mavs and Mallards played another tight game as the Mavs pulled off the victory, 2-0. Missouri goaltender Rob Nolan stopped all 22 Quad City shots and earned his first shutout of the season.

Olivier Filion continued his hot streak in the first period, scoring the first goal of the game on a deflection from a shot from the point by Mike Wakita, extending Filion's point streak to seven games. Bill Vandermeer was given an assist on the goal, his fourth in two games. Mallards' goaltender Adam Russo was shaken up on the play and replaced by David Brown just 11 minutes into the game. Rob Nolan faced few chances by the Mallards, stopping all five of Quad City's shots. David Brown and Adam Russo on the other hand faced a full workload, facing a combined 15 shots by the Mavericks. There were no penalties called in the period.

The Mavericks had been having their struggles on the power play prior to this week, but the Mavericks would capitalize on a man advantage for the second straight game when Simon Watson buried a rebound from Nathan O'Nabigon while the Mavs were on the power play. An assist was also given to Mike Berry on the goal. The period ended with the Mallards outshooting the Mavericks 10-9. Nolan was perfect on all 10 shots, but Brown stopped just eight of nine shots.

Rob Nolan was the story in the third period, as the Mallards tried mightily to break their scoreless ways. Nolan turned away all seven Mallard shots in the third period to preserve the goose egg and record the Mavericks' first shutout of the 2010-11 season. In total, Nolan stopped 22 shots on the night. Quad City's David Brown turned in a good performance as well, stopping 22 shots on 23 attempts in two and a half periods of work.

The Mavs finished the night one-for-two on the power play, recording a power play goal for the second straight game. Quad City was held scoreless on just one power play. The three stars of the game were Simon Watson, Filion and Nolan.

The Mavs hit the road the day after Christmas for three games in three days, two games at Wichita and one at Tulsa. They return home for a New Year's Eve showdown with the Colorado Eagles and kick off 2011 with a January 1 game against Quad City.
