Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
NASHVILLE- Albuquerque (25-25) came up with one run in the ninth on a pinch-hit RBI single by Tony Gwynn Jr. but fell 3-2 to the Nashville Sounds (14-34) in the second consecutive one-run ballgame.
The Sounds scored a run in the second inning and another in the third to take an early 2-0 advantage. First-baseman Hunter Morris smacked his 10 home run of the season in the second and centerfielder Josh Prince grounded into a force out an inning later allowing Scooter Gennett to score.
Albuquerque cut the lead in half in the fifth. Catcher Matt Wallach (1-3, R, RBI, BB) blasted his second home run of the 2013 season putting the Isotopes within striking distance of Nashville.
Leftfielder Khris Davis belted a solo shot the seventh in what would prove to be the game-winning run putting the finishing touches on Nashville's 3-2 win.
The Isotopes made some noise in the ninth inning when right-fielder Chili Buss (2-4, R) and first-baseman Rusty Ryal hit back-to-back singles to lead off the frame. After two strikeouts, Tony Gwynn Jr. delivered a pinch-hit single plating Buss drawing Albuquerque to within one of Nashville. The club would not get any closer, falling to the Sounds by the slimmest of margins.
Starting pitcher Blake Johnson (4-3, 3.79) suffered the loss for the Isotopes but put together the third efficient outing in a row by an Albuquerque starter. The righty went six innings deep allowing two runs on eight hits. He also walked two, struck out six and surrendered a home run.
Right-handed pitcher Anthony Ortega finished the game for the Isotopes firing two innings out of the bullpen. He allowed one run on one hit, a solo homer to Davis. He fanned two hitters.
Right-hander Johnny Hellweg (3-4, 3.99) earned the win for the Sounds pitching six innings of one-run baseball. Righty Rob Wooten recorded his sixth save of the year striking out three, but allowed a run on three hits in the process.
Albuquerque and Nashville take the field tomorrow, May 27 to conclude their four-game set at 1:05 PM MDT. Southpaw Aaron Laffey (1-2, 7.78) will take the mound with the Isotopes looking to win the series against righty Tyler Thornburg (0-5, 6.80) of Nashville. The Isotopes continue their eight-game road trip with a four-game series against the Memphis Redbirds before returning to Albuquerque for a four games against the Oklahoma City RedHawks starting June 1.
