Round Rock Express News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - After failing to score in the first two games of the series, the Round Rock Express (26-24) picked up its first win of the season against the Memphis Redbirds (26-22) by a final score of 4-3 Sunday night.
It took until the 22nd inning on the road trip but the Express finally scored its first run in three games. After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Round Rock tied the score at one apiece in the top of the fourth.
Catcher Robinson Chirinos worked a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a ground out by first baseman Chris McGuiness. Designated hitter Aaron Cunningham reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second with one out. After a strikeout, second baseman Yangervis Solarte singled to load the bases for right fielder Jim Adduci. With Adduci at the plate, Memphis starter Richard Castillo uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Chirinos to score and end the longest scoring drought of the season.
Another leadoff walk led to the first Express lead of the road trip when left fielder Joey Butler worked one to begin the sixth inning. He also advanced to second on a ground out and later scored on a one-out single off the bat of newly acquired third baseman Mark Teahen, his first RBI in an Express uniform.
The Round Rock bullpen failed to hold the lead as the Redbirds tied the game in the bottom half of the seventh on a one-out RBI single off right-hander Kyle McClellan.
The E-Train retook the lead in the top of the eighth after Butler and Solarte each singled to begin the frame. Adduci sacrificed the runners into scoring position, but Butler was thrown out at the plate one batter later on a ground ball by Teahen.
Smart base running advanced Teahen to second on the play, putting runners on second and third with one out. Needing a big hit, shortstop Greg Miclat came through with a two-run double to put the Express back in the driver's seat, 4-2.
Memphis rallied for one run in the bottom of the eighth when the Redbirds cut the lead to 4-3, scoring on the second passed ball of the season by Chirinos.
Holding a one-run advantage, closer Cory Burns picked up his ninth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, nailing down the first victory of the road trip.
The Express continues its eight-game road trip with the series finale against the Redbirds at 1:05 p.m. Monday afternoon. Round Rock will then open a four-game set against the New Orleans Zephyrs in Metairie, La. For more information on the Express, visit www.RoundRockExpress.com or call (512) 255-2255.
