QMJHL Charlottetown Islanders

Isles Pick up 11th Straight Win on Bizarre Night

Charlottetown Islanders News Release

On a night where two games were played and tensions ran high, both the Charlottetown Islanders and Colten Ellis emerged with major records.

After concluding last night's game with a 5-0 victory, the Islanders put the boots to the Cape Breton Eagles once again, picking up a 7-1 victory and 11th straight victory, a franchise record winning streak. For Ellis, the shutout dating back to March 16th was his 17th career shutout, tying Philippe Cadorette for first in QMJHL history with that mark.

"It was disappointing to have the game cut off because we had a lot of momentum and were playing a great game, but the boys picked up right where we left off and it was great to see." said Ellis on the victory. "To be honest, I don't try and focus on those things, I just prepare for every game the same way and give the team a chance any way I can to get the victory."

Bailey Peach capped off the scoring in the third period of the March 16th game before the two teams jumped right back on the ice to take part in the game originally scheduled for tonight. When the puck dropped for the true first period, the scoring didn't stop. Brett Budgell picked up the first goal of the game on the powerplay before Lukas Cormier dropped one of his own in the last second, blast a slapshot past Eagles netminder Nicolas Ruccia for his 14th goal on the season.

Tensions grew and things started to get hostile as the Isles kept piling on goals. Eagles forward Matthew MacDonald threw a high hit on Noah Laaouan before Zac Beauregard entered the mix, getting his gloves off and beating on MacDonald before the referees gave him a five-minute major and a game misconduct. It was one of a number of misconducts as Thomas Casey, along with Cape Breton's Liam Kidney, Connor Trenholm, and Jarrett Baker were all escorted to the showers early. Ellis, who sat between the benches for the second game, said it's a symptom of the current league schedule.

"If any two teams are playing each other twelve and thirteen times... it's expected to get a little chippy," said the Cape Breton-born Ellis. "We're trying not to stray away from our gameplan and continuing to do what works for us."

"This is a byproduct of the schedule and I think the only reason it's taken this long is because the game has changed for the better," added Hulton, expanding on the issue. "If this were a decade ago, I don't think you could ever have this type of schedule."

"In fairness to everyone involved, it's getting old, it's getting long, and it's getting hard; it's no one's fault, the league is working hard and Public Health is trying to do what's best for everybody, it's just a very unique situation and frustrations are starting to boil over. When you back-to-back like that and add the odd circumstances, I think it's a little understandable that emotions percolate over."

Patrick Guay had one of his best nights as an Islander, recording two goals and driving the play in a positive direction all night. Casey also contributed a pair of goals while Noah Laaouan added three assists. Oscar Plandowski contributed the final goal while William Trudeau, Keiran Gallant, Ben Boyd, Drew Elliott, and Peach all added single helpers.

These two teams will renew hostilities on Sunday afternoon as Charlottetown travels to Cape Breton for a matinee affair. You can catch the action at any of our five viewing partners across Charlottetown, on Eastlink Community TV Channel 10/610, or on Fair Isle Ford Isles Radio!
