Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
The Saint John Sea Dogs (8-7-3-1) hit the ice for a St. Patrick's Day matchup against the Moncton Wildcats (7-8-1-0) on Wednesday evening. The Sea Dogs dropped the game 6-2, ending their 3-game win streak with their first loss since returning to play.
Zachary Emond got the start in net for the Sea Dogs making 19 saves and Dakota Lund-Cornish got the start for the Wildcats stopping 31 shots. Goals from Ryan Francis and Peter Reynolds led a strong offensive push in the first two periods, where the Sea Dogs outshot the Wildcats 28-12, but the momentum shifted in the third period and the Sea Dogs were unable to recover from three late game Wildcats goals.
The Sea Dogs penalty kill got their first taste of action early, when Liam Leonard was sent to the box for tripping 2:10 into the first. Ryan Francis broke up a Wildcats passing play in the defensive zone and skated his way to a shorthanded breakaway that he was quick to capitalize on, deking past Lund-Cornish and putting Saint John on the board.
The Sea Dogs got their first power play of the night when Mathis Cloutier was sent off for tripping, but the Wildcats Jacob Stewart matched the Sea Dogs shorty with one of his own, tying the game up at 7:22.
Moncton took the lead with 22 seconds left in the first period when rookie Maxim Barbashev pushed the puck in after a scramble inside the crease.
The Sea Dogs left the first frame trailing 2-1, despite having a strong offensive presence all period, outshooting the Cats 12-7.
A penalty to Gabriel Bernier at 10:05 got Saint John's power play out on the ice. The Sea Dogs put pressure on Moncton, keeping the play in the offensive zone past the power play and firing a barrage of shots at Lund Cornish before breaking through with a goal from Peter Reynolds, tipping in a shot from the point from Ryan Francis at 16:12.
Moncton took the lead back quickly with a goal from Gabriel Bernier 15 seconds later. The Wildcats lead the score 3-2 going into the third, while Saint John lead the shots 28-12.
The momentum shifted in the third period, with Wildcats scoring three goals and holding the Sea Dogs to five shots all period. Moncton capitalized on the man advantage 29 seconds into a power play, Wildcats captain Jacob Hudson shot the puck top corner past Emond's shoulder extending their lead to 5-3 at 9:47, and Philippe Daoust added another goal for the Cats at 13:07 to end the game with a 6-2 win for Moncton.
