Charlottetown Islanders News Release

After kicking off the first of three games up in Quebec in a successful fashion, the Islanders look to grow upon their 4-1 victory against Drummondville and start up a winning streak tonight against the Phoenix. Sherbrooke came into tonight's game off the heels of a big win against the Quebec Remparts, a team close to the top of the QMJHL standings. After having the last game off, Jacob Goobie got the call this evening for his first start of the road trip. Out of his nine games played heading into tonight's bout, Goobie sported a .907 SV% and would be looking to stand tall for his team to boost that number up. As well rolling into game time, Patrick Guay was tied for the league lead in goals and would be looking to pull ahead of the competition and take sole lead. We were all set up for a highly intense game on this Friday night in Sherbrooke.

Scoring was quick to get underway in this one as one Charlottetown Islander had a career highlight at 4:45 into the first. Sam Bowness was able to drive his way hard to the net and get a shot off on Ivan Zhigalov, following some net-front confusion, the puck had trickled its way across the line. This marked Bowness's first career QMJHL and put the Isles ahead 1-0. Helping hands on the goal were Matis Ouellet and Sam Archibald. The lead was short-lived however as former Islander Justin Gill was able to beat Goobie and tie the game up for the Phoenix. Assisting on the Gill goal were Anthony Munroe-Boucher and William Bishop.

Shots through 20 minutes favored Sherbrooke 18-7. Marking a heavy opening frame for Goobie but he managed to keep his teammates square with the Phoenix through one.

The second period only contained one tally being added onto the scoreboard and it couldn't have been done in a more unfortunate matter for the Isles. The Isles made a 2-on-1 charge down the ice when Patrick Guay sent one cross-ice to set Brett Budgell up for the one-timer. Unfortunately for the Isles, Budgell was unable to cash in on the chance and it lead to Sherbrooke charging back the other way where Joshua Roy drove in on net and was able to beat Goobie. This was Roy's 8th goal of the year and put his team ahead 2-1.

Shots on goal were still heavily in favor of the PhÅ"nix heading into the final frame at 29-16. Both Goobie and Zhigalov were playing steady between the pipes to keep the game competitive and set up for an exciting finish.

The Phoenix were the team to strike first in the final period unfortunately for the Isles and Goobie. Joshua Roy and Julien Anctil were quick to break into the Isles zone on a 2-on-1 where Roy was able to feed Anctil the puck. Anctil held out for a minute to scope out Goobie before sending one low on the glove side to beat the Isles netminder and put Sherbrooke up 3-1. Roy stood as the lone assist on the goal. Drew Elliott was able to keep the Islanders alive in the final minutes however as he was able to beat Zhigalov in tight with just over a minute left to play. Noah laaouan and William Trudeau were the assists on the short-handed goal that was Elliott's 4th on the year.

Sadly for the Isles Elliott's tally was all they could manage late as 3-2 stood as the final tally for the PhÅ"nix. Final shots favored Sherbrooke 36-26.

Three Stars of the Game:

Joshua Roy- Goal and an assist

Ivan Zhigalov- 24 saves

Justin Gill- Goal

The Islanders are back in action tomorrow evening when they make their way to Centre d'excellence Sports Rousseau to take on the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. Puck drop is set for 5 pm Island time.
