Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The Islanders were able to find their way back to the win column and kick off this five-game road trip successfully when they defeated the Drummondville Voltigeurs 4-1 Wednesday night. Jakub Brabenec found the net for his third on the year that stood to be the game-winner and Xavier Simoneau finished with an assist in his first game in Drummondville as a member of the opposition. Oliver Satny had a good night in net as well Wednesday evening stopping 28 of 29 shots. Now, the Isles make their way to Sherbrooke for the second of three games in Quebec where they will be taking on the PhÅ"nix. Puck drop is set for 8 pm Island time this evening at Palais des Sports Leopold-Drolet.
Sherbrooke has had a rather pleasant start to the season sitting with an 8-3-0-0 record. As well, the PhÅ"nix are riding a two-game winning streak into this evening's bout with the Isles. Sherbrooke's last outing was on October 30th when they completed an impressive 5-2 victory over the talented Quebec Remparts. Prior to the game against the Remparts, the PhÅ"nix beat Charlottetown's Wednesday night opponent the Drummondville Voltigeurs 3-1, however, the Isles being able to do it one better with a 4-1 victory. Sherbrooke is currently being lead in offense by Montreal Canadiens fifth-round pick Joshua Roy. The 2003 born left-winger sits with nineteen points on the season including seven goals.
The Islanders currently sit in second place in the QMJHL standings with a total of 19 points. The Shawinigan Cataractes are the only team sitting ahead of them currently with 20 points. It's worth noting though that the Isles sit with at least one game in hand on all QMJHL teams except for the Cape Breton Eagles, who have also competed in 14 contests to this point. Shawinigan, Charlottetown, and Quebec currently hold the title of most wins in the league to this point all with nine on the year.
With his assist Wednesday night Xavier Simoneau now has an even twenty points this season out of his eleven appearances. Simoneau sits currently in third amongst skaters for total points this season trailing a pair of Cataractes in Xavier Bourgault and Olivier Nadeau. Xavier also sits just one back of the league leader in assist who is none other than teammate Noah Laaouan. The Isles defenseman has fifteen assists through his fourteen games to go along with one goal for sixteen total points.
An Islanders player to keep an eye on as well is number sixteen, Patrick Guay. Guay has been on a tear lately being a nightmare for opposing netminders around the league. Patrick sits tied for the league lead in goals with Shawinigan's Olivier Nadeau, both lighting the lamp eleven times this year. Guay also returns to Sherbrooke tonight for the first time, not in a PhÅ"nix jersey. Patrick spent the first two and a quarter years in the league with Sherbrooke before being acquired by the Islanders last season. Guay amassed eighty points in his time with Sherbrooke.
Both teams look to stay in the win column tonight, Jim Hulton most likely turns back to Jacob Goobie for this bout as he's been splitting up the goaltending duties thus far into the season. Friday night's action gets underway at 8 pm local time this evening.
