Cape Breton Eagles News Release
VICTORIAVILLE - The Cape Breton Eagles snapped a four game losing streak with a thrilling 3-2 shootout victory in Victoriaville on Friday night.
Goals weren't easy to come by and just one was scored in the first period. Eagles defenseman Emile Perron, who earlier in the day was selected to play in Hockey Canada's Capital Challenge series, skated up from his own end and ripped the puck over goaltender Nikolas Hurtubise for his first career goal. The goal was featured on TSN's Instagram feed on Friday night. The Eagles led 1-0 after 20 minutes.
Period two belonged to the Tigres and it started in the opening minute. Connor Frenette fed the puck to Loick Daigle in front of the net and he beat Rémi Delafontaine to tie the game. Daigle was involved in some fireworks later in the period as he ended up fighting Eagles forward Connor Trenholm. Trenholm was given the instigator, and it set up a Victoriaville power play late in the period.
Jérémy Langlois found himself deep in the Eagles zone, and in an attempt to clear, ended up banking it off a Victoriaville body. The puck came out to Joey Vetrano who waited patiently to deke around Delafontaine for the go ahead goal.
The 2-1 score held for most of the third period, including a six minute sequence without a whistle. Before period's end, the Eagles found their tying goal- Langlois hammering a cross-ice one timer from Émile Hegarty-Aubin with just over seven minutes to play.
The rest of the third period and overtime settled nothing as the teams traded chances. The shooters took over as the shootout began, with three consecutive goals- Victoriaville's Tommy Cormier & Olivier Coulombe and Cape Breton's Dawson Stairs. When Ivan Ivan was denied by Nikolas Hurtubise, the Tigres had the chance to clinch the game.
But Connor Frenette was unable to score. It came down to Eagles captain Sean Larochelle, was honoured before the game in an emotional ceremony and presented with his championship ring for winning the President's Cup in 2021. The overager delivered in the big moment and the shootout continued.
The goaltenders then began to steal the show, as the first three rounds of the sudden death portion went by without any goals. import forward Nikita Prishchepov broke the ice in the seventh round, but Trenholm was able to counter with a goal of his own.
After Pier-Olivier Roy was denied, Kian Bell lit the lamp to send the Eagles off with a shootout victory. It was the first time Victoriaville lost in the shootout this season after four consecutive wins.
Delafontaine picked up the win, stopping 24 of 26 shots in the shootout in addition to five of the eight shots in the shootout. Hurtubise turned aside 33 of 35 shots in the loss, as well as four of the eight shots in the shootout.
The Eagles will now finish off their three game Quebec swing tomorrow afternoon in Shawinigan. Puck drop is at 5 PM Atlantic time as they visit the Cataractes.
