Charlottetown Islanders News Release
After rookie Jakub Brabenec and Jacob Goobie delivered a night to remember for Islanders fans yesterday against the Gatineau Olympiques, the Isles rolled into TD Station tonight with hopes to keep the magic alive. Now riding a four-game win streak, the Islanders clashed with a Sea Dogs team fresh off of a big win via shootout against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. With Charlottetown currently leading the season series 2-1, Gordie Dwyer and the Sea Dogs came into this one eager to square things up.
The score sheet was found for the first time in this one just a little past the halfway marker of the frame. At 11:49 into the period, William Dufour lasered a one-timer past a sprawling Oliver Satny to find the back of the net for his league-leading 10th of the season while on the powerplay. Setting up Dufour was Josh Lawrence and Jeremie Poirier. With exactly one minute left to play in the frame, Peter Reynolds took advantage of a 2-on-0 when he got a feed from Dufour to bury the puck home and make it 2-0 for Saint John. Brady Burns and William Dufour had the helpers on this one.
Shots through the first 20 minutes of play stood in the Sea Dogs favor 8-7.
Saying that Patrick Guay is hot right now would be an understatement. Guay was able to stay with the puck through a hard check and snipe one cross-ice to beat Lemieux on the glove side, bringing the Isles to within a score. Assisting on the play were Matis Ouellet and Noah Laaouan. At 17:21 into the second period, Patrick LeBlanc was left wide-open in front of the Saint John crease when a loose puck found its way to his stick. LeBlanc buried the puck with ease to tie the game up at two. Lukas Cormier and Xavier Simoneau were the helping hands on this one.
Some late shenanigans from Xavier Simoneau and an end-of-period cross-checking penalty from Brady Burns would have the final frame starting with some 4-on-4 hockey.
Shots were tallied at 18-16 in favor of the Isles heading into the last 20 minutes of play.
It only took a little over a minute for Brett Budgell to find the puck in the slot to wrist one on the net and under Lemieux's arm to put the Isles ahead 3-2 early in the final frame. Assisting on the powerplay goal was Patrick Guay. After a Lukas Cormier goal was reversed due to an offside, Peter Reynolds and William Dufour connected again for Reynolds's second goal of the night to tie this one up at 3.
Xavier Simoneau wasn't going to let this one go any further than the 3rd period though as he fired one down low on Lemieux from the slot to put the Islanders ahead 4-3 with just under three minutes left to play in this one. Brett Budgell assisted on the Simoneau goal that stood to be the game-winner in this one.
Final shots on goal were in the Islanders favor 31-24.
Three Stars of the Game:
Peter Reynolds(SJ)- 2 goals
Xavier Simoneau(CHA)- Game-winning goal and an assist
William Dufour(SJ)- 1 goal, 2 assists
