Islanders Pull Ahead in Third Period for Victory over Eagles

December 17, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

CHARLOTTETOWN - It was anyone's game heading into the third period but it was the Charlottetown Islanders who pulled away form the Cape Breton Eagles for a 5-2 victory on Friday night in Charlottetown.

It was actually the Eagles who struck first, on a nice shot from defenseman Sean Larochelle coming from the left wing to put it up and over Jacob Goobie. There would be no further scoring and the opening period finished 1-0 for the visitors. However, the Eagles received bad news as later in the period Larochelle left the game with a lower body injury and did not return.

Despite not being able to score in the opening period, Charlottetown didn't waste any time neutralizing the score as Patrick LeBlanc tied the game with a shot over Nicolas Ruccia's shoulder. Then less than two minutes later, William Trudeau put Charlottetown up 2-1. He found his own rebound and put it through Ruccia's legs to give the home side the lead. But before period's end, Conor Shortall would knot the score with a shot through a screen and the period finished 2-2.

A fortunate bounce put the home side ahead to start the third period. A shot came off the end boards and out in front to Jarrett Todd who was able to settle a dribbling puck and put it by Ruccia for the go ahead goal. Then, later in the period, for the first time in the night a team would come through on the power play- as Ben Boyd got his stick on a Noah Laaouan shot in the dying seconds of a Jérémy Langlois penalty.

With 2:25 remaining in the third period, Eagles coach Matt Anthony lifted his netminder Ruccia with 2:25 to play. The Eagles had a lot of possession in the Charlottetown zone but couldn't find the back of the net, and Drew Elliot hit the empty net with one second to play to finish the scoring at 5-2.

Goobie stopped 12 of 14 shots in the win, while Ruccia stopped 34 of 38 shots in addition to the empty netter.

Prior to the game the Eagles announced the reassignments of forwards Nicolas Hogue & Mikhail Nizovkin who are no longer on the team's active roster. Affiliate forward Luke Patterson remained with the club and is expected to play again tomorrow night. With Rémi Delafontaine away from the team for personal reasons, Xavier Farrah once again served as the backup goaltender.

The same two teams will do battle tomorrow night in Charlottetown. Puck drop on Friday is at 7 PM. The game will be broadcast on Eastlink Television, and also is available for purchase online at https://watch.chl.ca. You can also hear all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 6:30 PM on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com
