Game Preview: December 17 vs Cape Breton
December 17, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The Islanders were able to walk through Moose country Wednesday night without a hitch. After entering the third period with just a two-goal lead at 3-1, the Isles potted five in the final frame to take an 8-2 victory. Charlottetown had proved that they were the team with the stronger depth in their lineup as both squads had key pieces out either injured or at World Junior Camps. The Isles bottom-six stepped up extremely well being responsible for four out of five final frame tallies. Now, Jim Hulton will hope to see the same strength throughout his team's game tonight as they welcome Maritime foes the Cape Breton Eagles to the Eastlink Centre for the first time this year. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 pm on this Friday night.
Cape Breton is going through some hard times this year sitting with only seven wins so far this season and a record of 7-18-3-2 for nineteen total points. The Eagle are currently in last place in the QMJHL and are five points out of a playoff spot. Cape Breton is currently being led this season by 2002 born Czech Republic import Ivan Ivan. Even with his team going through some tough times this year, Ivan has been putting together a rather impressive season. The Ostrava native has netted eighteen goals so far and has thirty total points this season, a strong enough performance to get him invited to Czech Republic's World Junior Development Camp. With their leading man away now, the Eagles will be looking to see some development out of their younger core in this one. Islanders fans should be on the lookout for Jack Campbell and the Squires brothers who are P.E.I natives. Cam Squires scored his first career QMJHL goal against the Isles earlier this season after being set up by his brother Jacob.
After their win in Halifax, the Islanders are now on a two-game win streak and sit with a solid 20-7-2-0 record this season. Their efforts have them atop the QMJHL with 42 points, three ahead of Sherbrooke's 39 although the Isles do have two more games played. We'll be waiting to see if head coach Jim Hulton goes with the same lines as Wednesday night or if he continues shaking things up with his lineup still without the presence of key pieces in Lukas Cormier, Jakub Brabenec, Xavier Simoneau, and Michael Horth. The first two being away at the World Juniors and the others being injured. It was a big night for Matis Ouellet in Halifax as he put home his first career QMJHL goal, and then moments later his second. The Islanders 32nd overall pick in the 2021 QMJHL Draft has put seven points on the board so far this campaign adding five assists to those first two career goals. Eyes should remain on Ouellet tonight as he'll be hungry to find the back of the net again in this bout to keep beefing up those stats.
Charlottetown and Cape Breton have met twice so far this year both times being over in Cape Breton. The Islanders have outscored the Eagles 12-4 on those two meetings. It is first versus last this evening to kick off a back-to-back as we get set for the final two games before the Islanders go on Christmas vacation. Puck drops at 7:30 pm tonight and 7 pm tomorrow night. The Isles will be revved up coming out of the gates this evening as they'd like to capture these four points over the weekend and roll into the break strong and solidify their spot atop the league. Tickets are available at the Eastlink Centre Box Office in person (Monday to Friday 11 am to 5 pm) as well as before game time, online, or by phone at 902.629.6625. Make sure to get your tickets early and come on out to help your boys in black and purple protect the bridge.
