Charlottetown Islanders News Release

The theme of the night was winning, and the Charlottetown Islanders showed everyone how it's done.

The Islanders skated to a 4-0 shutout victory over the youthful Saint John Sea Dogs, sending the lively Eastlink Centre crowd home with a free ticket to the next Wednesday night home game, on January 30th against the Victoriaville Tigres.

The Islanders kicked off the scoring early in the first. Keith Getson, wearing the C in place of Pierre-Olivier Joseph for the past three games, notched his first goal of the season following a slick pass from new linemate Kevin Gursoy.

The scoring continued for the Islanders at the end of the period. Charlottetown native Thomas Casey pounced a rebound in front of Sea Dogs goaltender Alex D'Orio and buried it into the open cage. Forwards Cole Edwards and Xavier Fortin each drew assists on the play; the assists were the first points in each of their QMJHL careers.

In the second period, the Isles kept it coming. Gursoy finished off a beautiful tic-tac-toe play from Getson and Daniel Hardie on the powerplay. For the 19 year-old forward from Windsor, Ontario, that was his first goal as a Charlottetown Islander.

Finally, midway through the third, rookie Zac Beauregard would put the icing on the cake, finishing off a pretty passing play on a 3-on-1 odd-man rush alongside Thomas Casey and Liam Peyton.

Gursoy and Casey each finished with a goal and an assist. Matthew Welsh, who stopped all 32 shots he faced, moved in to sole possession of first in franchise history (including the PEI/Montreal Rocket) with 9 career shutouts.

Defenseman Hunter Drew, making his regular season debut tonight, didn't make it to the ten minute mark of the first period before being ejected from the game for checking to the head. With the penalty, he moves past David Henley in to sole possession of first in Islanders history in career PIM's. He now sits at 233.

"We started strong tonight, however we let them back in to the game." said associate coach Guy Girouard following the game. "Matt Welsh was great when he needed to be; he really helped this team get it's momentum back."

The Islanders are back in action tomorrow night, as they take on the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on our first Student Night of the season. Captain Pierre-Olivier Joseph also makes his return to the lineup! Tickets are available at the Eastlink Centre box office, by calling 902-629-6625, or online at https://boxoffice.eastlinkcentrepei.com.
