Charlottetown Islanders News Release
Charlie DesRoches didn't have to wait long to experience that "Welcome to the Q" moment.
"It was our home opener, for sure." Said the 16-year old defenseman. "We had a good crowd and were playing against a good Halifax team."
DesRoches, a native of Days Corner, PEI, was selected by the Sea Dogs in the second round, 32nd overall, of the 2018 QMJHL Draft out of the South Kent School Selects Hockey Academy program, playing with future teammate in Saint John Josh Lawrence and Charlottetown Islanders prospect Tommy Aitken. He had been committed to Northeastern University of the NCAA, however decided to forego his NCAA eligibility for the opportunity to play with the Sea Dogs.
"I had been talking to Saint John for a few days before the draft, and was hoping to be drafted by them." Said DesRoches. "Luckily, it worked out."
Tonight's game will mark the first time that DesRoches has played a game on Prince Edward Island since he played for the Kensington Wild major midget team in 2016-2017. DesRoches says it will be a fantastic experience coming home to play in front of his friends and family.
"Oh it's huge." Said DesRoches. "Having the opportunity to play in front of family and friends for the first time in a while is truly exciting."
DesRoches put up big offensive numbers while playing with the Selects Academy, leading all defenseman on his team with 12 goals and 42 points in 53 games last season. That being said, he's more than just a one-dimensional player.
"I'd describe myself as a reliable two-way defender" said DesRoches. "I'm good in my own end, and I like to contribute offensively, too."
Catch Charlie DesRoches in his first major junior game on Prince Edward Island tonight, as your Charlottetown Islanders take on DesRoches and the Saint John Sea Dogs. Tickets are available as always at the Eastlink Centre box office, by phone at 902-629-6625, or online at boxoffice.eastlinkcentrepei.com. See you at the rink!
