The Saint John Sea Dogs suffered their first regulation loss of the 2018-19 Season on Wednesday in Charlottetown, by a score of 4-0.

The Islanders opened the scoring at 3:44 of the first period on a goal from Keith Getson that went upstairs on Alex D'Orio. Former Sea Dog Kevin Gursoy added the helper on the goal. The Sea Dogs were awarded a five-minute man advantage after Nicholas Deakin-Poot took a nasty hit to the head at center ice from Hunter Drew of the Islanders. Drew was subsequently tossed from the game and Deakin-Poot did not return to the bench. The Sea Dogs poured on the shots during the powerplay but just couldn't solve Islander netminder Matthew Welsh. Charlottetown took a 2-0 lead at 16:15 after Thomas Casey knocked in a rebound over a sprawling Alex D'Orio. Kevin Mason took it upon himself to energize the team when he dropped the gloves with Charlottetown's Drew Johnston with 1:20 to go in the period. Charlottetown out shot Saint John 19-9 in the period.

An early powerplay marker by Kevin Gursoy saw the Islanders go up 3-0 at 3:11 of the second frame. The Sea Dogs then brought renewed energy midway through the second led by stellar play from Alex D'Orio. During a 5 on 3 penalty kill the Sea Dogs veteran net minder made several highlight reel saves to keep the Dogs in it. Saint John had several scoring chances during a period of sustained offence in the Islanders zone including some nifty stick handling from Filip Prikryl, but again Welsh stood strong. Dogs led the Isles in shots for the period, 11-10.

The third period saw the Sea Dogs carrying the late momentum from the 2nd with several chances in close but Matthew Welsh was determined between the pipes. The Islanders were then able to spring Liam Peyton as he left the penalty box to create a 3-on-1 that saw Zachary Beauregard complete the tic-tac-toe to put the Isles up 4-0 at 11:36. The Sea Dogs had two powerplays in the period but even with chance after chance couldn't convert. William Villeneuve was noticeable on the blueline quarterbacking the Sea Dogs powerplay. A scary moment for Josh Lawrence as he took an Alexander Dersch shot to the side of the face. He was slow to get up but was able to make it to the bench under his own power. The final in Charlottetown, Islanders 4, Sea Dogs 0.

Alex D'Orio was stellar in net for Saint John turning aside 37 shots in the loss. Welsh posted a well earned shut out stopping 32 for the win.

The Sea Dogs return to action on Friday night at 7:30pm in Moncton as the Wildcats host their first game in the new Avenir Centre. Catch the Sea Dogs at home on Saturday, Sept 29th as they host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at Harbour Station starting at 7pm. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station Box Office and online at www.harbourstation.ca.
