Charlottetown Islanders News Release
With the Christmas break looming near, the Charlottetown Islanders wrap up the first half of their season in style with a matchup against the Cape Breton Eagles at the Eastlink Centre on Wawanesa Toy Drive night.
The Isles, in conjunction with Wawanesa Insurance, are helping families in need across Prince Edward Island this holiday season, collecting toys this evening to be distributed by the United Way of PEI to Abegweit First Nations and Santa's Angels. Fans are asked to bring their new, unwrapped toys to donate, and they'll be entered to win an autographed Islanders jersey and the grand prize, a trip to the 2020 Memorial Cup, presented by Kia.
On the ice, the Islanders are riding a wave of momentum, having manhandled the Halifax Mooseheads last night 5-0 at the Scotiabank Centre. It's another in a line of victories for the Isles (19-12-4-0), who have won four of their last six games. Last night's victory saw the team string together an impressive offensive display, one where four different players found the back of the net.
One of those players was Liam Peyton, who scored twice in the game. The multi-point effort was the first in the big winger's QMJHL career; he now has six goals on the season and is just one point away from the career high 13 points he set last season.
Matthew Welsh is in line to get the start once again, coming off a big shutout performance in his 200th career QMJHL game. With the shutout, Welsh moves in to the top five in the QMJHL with a 2.65 goals against average and improves his save percentage to .905.
Meanwhile, the Isles will be taking on the Eagles for the first time at home this season. The Eagles (17-13-1-1) haven't had a week to write home about, finding themselves on the wrong end of a shutout themselves last night, 4-0 to the Moncton Wildcats, while having lost 5-1 to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Wednesday. Considered by experts to be one of the powerhouse teams in the QMJHL heading in to this season, the Eagles currently sit fifth in the Eastern Conference standings, six points behind the Islanders albeit with three games in hand.
The Eagles have been without one of their biggest weapons this week, however, as forward Egor Sokolov has joined Nikita Alexandrov at Team Russia's World Junior Championship training camp. It's a big loss for the Eagles, as Sokolov is fourth in the QMJHL point scoring race with 51 points so far this season.
