Eagles Edged in Overtime in First Half Finale in Charlottetown
December 14, 2019 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release
CHARLOTTETOWN - For the third time this season, the Cape Breton Eagles and Charlottetown Islanders battled to a 3-2 decision. It was the first time the teams played this year in PEI and it was the Islanders skating away with the victory in overtime.
Goals were hard to come by in the opening period, despite the bulk of the special teams action coming in the opening 20 minutes. Charlottetown had a prime opportunity to open the scoring when Mathias Laferrière was given a double minor less than two minutes into the contest.
it almost blew up on the Islanders though, as Derek Gentile earned a short handed breakaway- the first of a number the Eagles would have on the night- and was awarded a penalty shot. Gentile couldn't solve Welsh though, and with eight seconds left in the power play, Xavier Bernard ripped a shot through a screen to give the Islanders the lead.
The Eagles couldn't cash in on either of their two power plays in the opening frame, Charlottetown couldn't convert on their next power play, and it was 1-0 at the first intermission.
The second period was played entirely 5 on 5, but like the first, there was just one goal. Ryan Francis had a number of chances throughout the evening and cashed in with under three minutes to play to tie the game.
With Drew Johnston in the box, Laferrière gave the Eagles a late lead at the 15:51 mark. However in the final three minutes Zachary Beauregard was able to park at the side of the goal and push the puck over the line, tying the game.
It looked like the game would head to overtime tied at 1 as the score held with under five minutes to play. There be an extra period, but both teams had one goal left to score.
Cape Breton outshot and outchanced Charlottetown in regulation, but the Islanders would get the bulk of the opportunities in the extra session- including late when Laferrière was sent off. There was another short handed breakaway for the visitors- Shaun Miller with a chance to win the game- but the Eagle forward fired the puck over the net.
In the final minute of the overtime period, there was a goal mouth scramble in the Eagles end and Thomas Casey was able to push the puck over the line. After a short video review the goal was confirmed and Charlottetown clinched an overtime victory.
The QMJHL will now break for two weeks with action resuming on December 28th. The Eagles will begin the second half of the season with the fourth annual Hurley Cup. The first game will take place on December 28th in Halifax as the Eagles take on the Mooseheads at 7 PM.
