Dogs Finish First Half .500 with 4-2 Win over Mooseheads
December 14, 2019 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
The Saint John Sea Dogs (17-17-1-0) are now a .500 hockey club heading into the Christmas break after a 4-2 win over the Halifax Mooseheads on Saturday night at TD Station. Saint John also jumps past Halifax (15-15-2-1) in the Maritimes division standings and now sit in a three way tie for 10th in the league with Blainville-Boisbriand and Val-D'Or.
Zachary Bouthillier started in goal for Saint John. The veteran netminder was coming off an impressive performance in a 3-1 win over the Moncton Wildcats at home on Wednesday night. Halifax started Cole McLaren.
A scoreless first period saw the Sea Dogs peppering the Mooseheads with shots. 16 pucks were fired towards Cole McLaren but the score remained 0-0 heading into the second period. Halifax managed just four shots in 20 minutes.
Halifax got out front though to start the second period after Patrick Kyte scored at 5:06. The Sea Dogs would quickly respond.
Jordan Spadafore let a blast go from the blue line at 7:38 to tie the game a 1-1. Julian Vander Voet had an assist on the goal in his first game back since serving a three game suspension for checking to the head.
With just seconds to go in the second period Nicolas Guay found the back of the net for his 15th of the year to put the Dogs up by one as they went to the dressing room.
Shots were even in the second, 12-12.
Business picked up in the third period as both teams played with intensity. Rookie Landon Miron scored his first QMJHL goal at 12:23 for the Mooseheads and we were back to a tied game.
The tie was short lived as William Villeneuve scored his seventh of the year at 13:33. Guay and Gould had helpers on the goal.
Jason Horvath laid a heavy hit from behind on Charlie DesRoches at 17:43 and Jordan Spadafore was there to make his presence known, taking Horvath down to the ice. Horvath received a checking from behind two minute minor while Spadafore took two minute unsportsmanlike conduct and roughing penalties.
The Moosheads pulled the goalie for the power play and Nicolas Guay sent the puck the length of the ice into the open cage at 19:18 for his second of the game to seal it for the Sea Dogs, 4-2.
Bouthillier finished with 24 saves for the win, McLaren had 35 stops for Halifax.
