June 17, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Behind a dominant pitching performance by starter Parker Bridwell, the Aberdeen IronBirds cruised to a 7-2 win in front of an opening day crowd of 6,724.
The IronBirds then got on the board in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs off of Hudson Valley Renegades' starter Wilking Rodriguez. Connor Narron struck out looking for the first out. Mychal Givens then singled and scored on Joe Velleggia's RBI double. Velleggia advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a Jeremy Nowak fly-out to right, Martin Serrata doubled to right, scoring Velleggia.
The 'Birds got on the board again in the bottom of the third. Austin Knight and Dudley Leonora led off with back-to-back singles, and Riley Hornback reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. A Rodriguez balk scored Knight from third and advanced Leonora and Hornback to third and second respectively. After a Wynston Sawyer strike-out, Connor Narron hit an RBI groundout to score Leonora and make the score 4-0 in favor of the home team.
Bridwell, meanwhile, continued his dominance on the mound. After allowing a single to lead off the fifth, Bridwell struck out the side in what turned out to be his final inning.
The IronBirds scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Riley Hornback reached second on a two-base error, and stole third until Wynston Sawyer batted him in with an RBI groundout to third base.
The Renegades avoided a shutout by scoring two off of IronBirds' pitcher James Brandhorst. Gerardo Olivares hit a double to left-center, Jeff Malm walked and both eventually scored on a two-out double by Brian Bryles to make the final score 7-2.
Bridwell got the win, moving to 1-0 on the year. He allowed just four hits while striking out 9 in 5 innings of work. Wilking Rodriguez took the loss, dropping to 0-1. He allowed 8 hits, 6 runs-all earned-, walked one and struck out three in 3.1 innings of work.
Game two of this three game series starts tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Hudson Valley will send Jason McEachern to the mound to square off against Jacob Cowan for Aberdeen.
