Jammers Open 2011 Season With Win, 9-3, Over Mahoning Valley

June 17, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Jamestown Jammers News Release

It was a mixture of offense and pitching that helped carry the Jamestown Jammers to an Opening Night victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 9-3.

The Jammer offense pounded out 11 hits en route to the nine runs, while Josh Hodges delivered one of his best outings as a Jamestown Jammers. The 6-7 righty threw five innings, allowed one earned run and five hits with five strikeouts to earn the victory.

Offensively, Rand Smith, Brent Keys, Alfredo Lopez and Ryan Goetz all had two hit days, which included Keys' first professional home run.

The Jammers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Scrapper starting pitcher Joseph Colon. Lopez was hit by a pitch and stole second base with Goetz batting.

The UC Riverside product then delivered a line-drive single to give the Jammers the lead. Smith added a two-out double to plate Jamestown's second run.

In the top of the third inning, the Jammers would break things open with four runs. Goetz had his second RBI single, Terrence Dayleg had a RBI ground-rule double, Colon threw a wild pitch with Goetz at third and Jobduan Morales singled off third base to account for the offense.

While Mahoning Valley would answer with a run in the bottom of the inning, Jamestown would answer with another run in the top of the fourth on a Smith single to push the lead back to six runs.

The Scrappers scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to inch closer to Jamestown; however, the Jammer offense had another answer in the top of the seventh. Marquise Cooper tripled to center field with one out, and Keys followed with a two-run blast into the Scrappers bullpen to put the game out of reach.

Mahoning Valley would threaten in the bottom of the eighth inning after Kenneth Toves walked the bases loaded, but the second-year pro would induce a fly out to center to end the inning and the Scrapper chances.

The win snaps a two-game losing streak to the Scrappers on Opening Day for the Jammers. The last time Jamestown won its first game of the season was in 2008 at home against the State College Spikes, 7-6.

Joseph Colon took the loss for Mahoning Valley. He went 2.1 innings and allowed six earned runs. Alex Lavisky paced the Scrapper offense with two hits, while Jerrud Sabourin contributed a RBI double.

The two teams will be back in action at Eastwood Field on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. For more information, log on to JamestownJammers.com
