DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (31-58) put together a five-run eighth inning against the Nashville Sounds (42-45) but fell just short of a comeback as they took an 8-7 loss, Thursday at Principal Park.

Nashville opened the scoring in the second on a Bruce Maxwell RBI single and the floodgates opened for the Sounds in the third. The visitors sent 10 batters to the plate and forced starter Alec Mills from the game after he gave up four earned runs through 2.1 innings. Brad Markey took over and allowed one inherited runner to score before shutting down the frame with back-to-back strikeouts.

Chris Coghlan got the I-Cubs on the board in the fourth with a leadoff bomb, his first since May of 2017. Singles from Mark Zagunis and Jason Vosler in the inning added another I-Cub run to make the score 5-2, still in favor of Nashville. The hit extended Vosler's hitting streak to 14 games.

A towering two-run blast to left off the bat of Anthony Garcia, his 15th of the season, put Nashville further ahead in the sixth. The Sounds added additional and necessary insurance in the eighth with an RBI single by Ramon Laureano.

Iowa didn't go quietly as Coghlan and Chesny Young both got on via singles in the eighth. Taylor Davis cashed in with a two-RBI double, before Vosler brought in Davis with a double of his own. Ryan Court and Bijan Rademacher added to the doubles party and each brought in a run as the four-consecutive doubles gave the I-Cubs five runs in the inning.

The I-Cubs put two more runners on in the ninth with a Zagunis hit and a Davis walk, but the comeback was left incomplete.

Nashville starter and former I-Cub Eric Jokisch spun 6.1 strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and fanning six. He improved to 3-8 on the season as he captured the win. Mills (4-9) took the loss.

Coghlan led Iowa's offense with a 3-for-5 game. Vosler, Davis and Zagunis each tabbed two hits.

Iowa and Nashville play a split doubleheader tomorrow at Principal Park with Game 1 beginning at 1:08 p.m. and Game 2 beginning at 7:08 p.m. Fireworks will follow the second contest. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
