Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, TN - Memphis and Iowa were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first seven innings Friday night until the Cubs rallied for three runs en route to a 4-1 win at AutoZone Park.
With the game knotted at 1-1 in the eighth inning Bobby Scales' one-out double ignited a three-run rally that saw nine Cubs come to the plate. With the bases loaded Welington Castillo was hit by an Oneli Perez pitch to hand Iowa the lead before Bryan LaHair's two-run double capped the rally. Scales finished the night with two hits and drove in Iowa's first run. Memphis' lone run came in the third inning with Jon Jay drawing a walk, stealing second and third then scoring on a Castillo throwing error.
John Gaub earned the win in relief for the Cubs tossing one inning. Perez took the loss for Memphis giving up three runs in his lone inning of work. Memphis starter Evan MacLane allowed one run on seven hits with five strikeouts over seven innings. Iowa starter Jeff Samardzija gave up one unearned run with five strikeouts across four innings.
