Iowa Falters in Pitcher's Duel

June 7, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (23-35) put up a strong effort but the Albuquerque Isotopes (31-29) took a 3-1 win, Thursday at Principal Park to secure a 2-1 series victory.

It was a pitcher's duel as both teams locked in to twirl six scoreless frames. Making a spot start, Daury Torrez gave Iowa 4.0 one-hit innings, walking one and fanning one. It was the righty's first start in nearly a year. Brad Markey picked up 2.0 shutout frames out of the bullpen.

Albuquerque broke through in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs on a single and two walks, the latter intentional. Shae Simmons forced in the first run of the game with a walk, leading to another call to the 'pen. Rob Zastryzny took over and on a Raimel Tapia single, allowed two of three inherited runners to score before getting out of the inning.

Jacob Hannemann helped Iowa avoid the shutout with a towering solo blast to center field in the eighth, his second of the season. Iowa rallied in the ninth as back-to-back singles from Efren Navarro and Victor Caratini with two outs to put the winning run at the plate. Taylor Davis made solid contact, but a diving stop at first by Pat Valaika ended the threat and secured the Isotopes victory.

Navarro, Caratini and Mike Freeman each nabbed two hits, accounting for six of Iowa's seven hits.

Iowa begins a series with the El Paso Chihuahuas for Firework Friday at 7:08 p.m. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
