LAS VEGAS (Aug. 18, 2015) - Iowa right-hander Blake Cooper loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth in a tie game, then hit Las Vegas pinch-hitter Dan Rohlfing to force in the winning run as the 51s (68-56) walked off over the Iowa Cubs (67-56) 6-5 in Pacific Coast League action Tuesday night at Cashman Field in Las Vegas.
It was the second straight night the 51s dropped Iowa with a walk-off win. The win kept Vegas atop the Pacific Southern Division, 1.5 games ahead of El Paso. The loss dropped Iowa into third place in the American Northern Division, 7.0 games behind first-place Oklahoma City with 21 games left to play.
Vegas grabbed an early 4-1 lead thanks to two-spots in both the third and the fourth innings. Iowa tightened up the game with a two-run fifth inning thanks to a two-run single by pinch-hitter Adron Chambers.
Vegas extended its lead to 5-3 in the sixth when Matt Reynolds singled home Dilson Herrera off Iowa righty Yoervis Medina.
However, Iowa bounced back with two runs to tie the game in the eighth when Mike Olt clubbed a two-RBI double off 51s right-hander Cody Satterwhite.
Left-hander Eric Jokisch started the game for Iowa and allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks with one strikeout over 4.0 innings. Cooper (6-4) tossed 1.1 innings and allowed a run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout to suffer the loss.
Righty Seth Lugo was called up from Double-A to make the start for Vegas and tossed 6.0 strong innings. He allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out four. Righty John Church (6-2) spun a scoreless top of the ninth to earn the win.
Arismendy Alcantara went 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead Iowa offensively. Javy Baez had two hits and scored a run. Olt and Chambers each drove in two with one hit each.
Herrera paced Las Vegas with three hits, a double, and RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Overall, five 51s hitters had multi-hits night as part of a 14-hit attack.
Iowa tied a team record with five double plays in the loss. It was the seventh time Iowa has had five twin-killings in a game, and the first time since May 13, 2013 at Reno.
The I-Cubs will now head to Salt Lake City to begin a four-game set Wednesday evening with the Salt Lake Bees Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. CT.
