Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
On Sunday afternoon at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, the Kannapolis Intimidators used a five-run inning in game one to win the first game 5-4, but split the spoils, dropping the second contest of the day to the Hagerstown Suns by a 9-4 margin. With the win in game one, the Intimidators achieved their first five-game winning streak of the season, but saw that streak end in the second game of the day.
In the first game, behind six innings from Cameron Bayne, the Intimidators scored five runs in the second inning off Paul Demny (6-5) and held on for a 5-4 victory. In the second inning, the Intimidators (20-22) had only two hits, a single by Brady Shoemaker and a two-run double by Juan Silverio in the big inning but benefitted from a number of wild pitches, a balk and a costly error by the Suns (16-27) which helped extend the inning.
After the five-run inning, the Suns score two in both the fourth and the sixth off Bayne (9-9) who worked out of first and second with no one down and a one-run lead to hand the game to Orlando Santos, who picked up his 11th save of the season. The Intimidators were out-hit in game one by a 7-3 margin.
Looking to get to .500 with a win in game two, the Intimidators used an RBI-single in the first from Nick Ciolli and a triple by Jake Oester and a single by Juan Silverio in the second to jump out 2-0 in search of their sixth straight win as well. However, starter Matt Hopps allowed back-to-back three run innings in the third and fourth and despite getting as close as 6-4, a three-run seventh off Chase Cooney ended the Intimidators comeback hopes. Hopps (1-10) took the loss while reliever Rob Worts pitched well for the final three innings behind the starter Graham Hicks for his fifth win in as many decisions this season.
With the loss in game two, the Intimidators missed out on an opportunity to end the day four games behind first, instead they are five games back of the first-place Lakewood BlueClaws, not an insurmountable margin with around a month remaining in the season.
The Intimidators look to clinch their third straight home-series win in a 7:05 pm game on Monday as Justin Collop looks to join Bayne with nine wins. He will be opposed by Paul Applebee at 7:05 pm.
