Hagerstown Suns News Release

Tonight, the Hagerstown Suns (51-60) were defeated by the Kannapolis Intimidators (50-59) in Game 1 of a five-game road series in Kannapolis, North Carolina at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium by a score of 14-9. Friday night's contest was washed out due to rain forcing a double header on Sunday, with the first game of the twin bill set for 1:05pm.

Suns LHP Evan Bronson (1-2) tossed 4.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits, while walking one and striking out five. Bronson surrendered a 2nd inning solo home run over the center field wall to DH Brady Shoemaker, who crushed Hagerstown pitching to the tune of a 4-for-5, two home run, six RBI evening at the plate.

Kannapolis scored runs in all but the fourth inning, with single tallies in the first three frames, courtesy of an RBI double to right field by SS Tyler Saladino in the first frame, Shoemaker's 11th home run of the season, and a sacrifice fly by CF Nick Ciolli.

Hagerstown bats put up four runs in the away half of the fourth inning, when C Sandy Leon delivered a sac fly, CF Eury Perez drove home one run with a suicide bunt single up the third base line, SS Rich Hague wrapped an RBI single through the left side, and 2B Adrian Sanchez put the ball on the ground to the right side, bringing home a run.

Intimidators RHP Ryan Buch went four innings, giving up five runs, four of them earned on four hits. In relief, LHP Zach Piccola (2-4) threw 1.2 innings and struck out three, allowing one hits and walking three.

Ciolli hit the third four-bagger for Kannapolis off LHP Josh Smoker in the bottom of the 7th inning, a solo shot over the right field fence.

With a 10-9 lead in the last of the eighth stanza, the Intimidators created a ton of cushion for themselves with their second four-run inning of the game, in which they brought nine men to the plate. Shoemaker hit a two-run double with the bases loaded to right field. RF Jordan Cheatham, making his South Atlantic League debut, ripped an RBI single to right field. And C Miguel Gonzalez lofted an RBI sac fly to left field.

Bronson was the losing pitcher of record, while Piccola garnered the win. RHP Taylor Thompson (S, 3) got the save by pitching 1.1 scoreless innings, and surrendering just two base hits and two walks.
