Hickory Crawdads News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - The Greensboro Grasshoppers rode an eighth-inning, three-run homer by 1B Chad Cregar to come back for the 5-3 win against the Hickory Crawdads, before 5,384 fans at NewBridge Bank Park on Sunday evening.
Greensboro (22-20, 54-58) struck first for a 1-0 lead with an RBI double by RF Rand Smith against RHP Neil Ramirez in the bottom of the second. Ramirez surrendered only one other run and just four total hits in his six-inning start, while striking out 10 batters.
The Crawdads (23-18, 63-48) came back to take their first lead on a two-run homer by LF Joe Bonadonna in the top of the fifth, making it 2-1. However, the Grasshoppers responded in the bottom of the frame with an RBI triple by 2B Wes Long to tie it at 2-2. That was the final hit allowed by Ramirez, who subsequently struck out the final five batters he faced.
Hickory regained the lead on a throwing error by C Carlos Paulino in the top of the seventh. With two on and two down, Paulino attempted a snap throw pick off to second, but the throw bounced to the outifeld, enabling SS Jonathan Roof to come in from third and put the 'Dads back in front, 3-2.
RHP Johan Yan navigated through the scoreless seventh before giving way to closer RHP Ovispo De Los Santos (0-1) with one on and two down in the bottom of the eighth. De Los Santos walked the first batter he faced, before Cregar belted the three-run shot to lift the Grasshoppers to the eventual 5-3 win.
De Los Santos was tagged with the loss for Hickory, while LHP Isaac Morales (1-0) got the win and RHP Alejandro Ramos logged the save for Greensboro.
