Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
(Kannapolis, NC) â Edgar Varela drove in the eventual game winning run and Josh Rupe (2-1) won his second game in the Intimidators 2-1 win over the Tourists Friday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Asheville (14-27) broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning. Walkill Guance led off with a triple and with two outs scored on a single by Garrett Gentry off Intimidators starter Paulino Reynoso.
Josh Rupe came in to relieve Reynoso following the RBI single and retired all four batters he faced including three on strikeouts. Although he did not factor in the decision, Reynoso gave the Intimidators (19-21) five and two-third innings of solid pitching. The left-hander retired 10 straight, including three 1-2-3 innings in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
The bullpen did its job with Rick Hummel (6) taking over for Rupe and notched his team-high sixth save retiring all six Tourists he faced.
In Game two of the series Saturday night, RHP Ben Crocket will start for the Tourists while Brian Miller goes for the Intimidators. Post-Game fireworks follow the game and Carolina Mall will hold a benefit for the Fraternal Order of Police. First pitch is 7:05pm.
