Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA â The Delmarva Shorebirds (22-19) scored four runs in the top of the eighth and went on to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats (18-22) tonight 5-3 at Historic Grayson Stadium. Joe Coppinger (2-0) picked up the win and Scott Rice pitched a scoreless ninth earning his fourth save of the season. Delmarva plated their first run of the eighth inning on a RBI double by shortstop Bryan Bass. With one out, the Shorebirds went on to load the bases off reliever Erik Fiedler. Fiedler then got Randy Ruiz to ground what would have been a double play ball to short. However, Sand Gnat shortstop Ja'Mar Clanton mishandled the ball allowing a run to score making the score 3-3 with the bases still loaded. Delmarva's final two runs came on a two-run scoring single to right field by Rafael Diaz for the 5-3 lead. The Sand Gnats scored single runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings. The run in the fifth came on a RBI triple to center by Larry Broadway. Robert Rodriguez plated Savannah's final run in the sixth on a RBI single. Sand Gnat leadoff man Reggie Fitzpatrick was 2 for 5 on the night with a run scored. Erik Fiedler (L, 0-2) took the loss in relief for the Sand Gnats. For the Shorebirds, Thomas Joyce was 2 for 4 with a run scored, a triple, and a RBI. Bass went 2 for 4 with a run scored, a double, and a RBI. The Sand Gnats will play game two against the Shorebirds tomorrow evening with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. The first 1,000 guests through the gates on Saturday will receive a Sand Gnat cap courtesy of ABC / Fox and Memorial Health.
