Intimidators Blast Four Home Runs in Rout

GREENSBORO, N.C. (July 8, 2014) - The Kannapolis Intimidators scored a season-high 12 runs for a third straight game, routing the Grasshoppers,12-2 (F/8), in a rain-shortened game on Tuesday at NewBridge Bank Park. Kannapolis (43-44, 14-6) set season highs with four home runs and 18 hits as nine Intimidators hit safely.

Robinson Leyer (5-5) matched his career-high with 7.0 innings of work, limiting Greensboro to two runs on three hits. He struck out one and walked one to earn a complete-game win. The tarp rolled out just before the start of the bottom of the eighth inning with Alex Powers poised to take over in relief.

Danny Hayes staked Kannapolis to an early lead with a 2-run home run (7) in the top of the first, blasting a no-doubt shot over the right-field wall.

Kannapolis expanded the lead to 6-1 with a 4-run third inning. Brett Austin took advantage of loaded bases with a 2-run base hit, and Carl Thomore followed with a blast to left field for a 2-run home run (3).

Austin Dean got a run back for Greensboro with a solo home run (7) in the bottom of the third inning, cutting the Intimidators lead to 6-2.

In the fifth, Austin led off with a double and scored on a Nolan Earley double. Two batters later, Engel crushed his second home run (3) of the series for a 9-2 lead. Austin added a sac-fly and Thomore chipped in an RBI-double in the sixth for an 11-2 advantage. Thomore finished 3-5 with 3 RBI and a triple shy of the cycle. Austin matched his career-high with 3 RBI.

Jacob Morris launched the team's fourth and final home run to lead off the top of the eighth off Esmerling De La Rosa for a 12-2 lead.

Greensboro starter Cody Crabaugh (1-1) lasted 4.0 innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits, including a pair of home runs, while striking out three and walking one in the loss. Tyler Kane tossed 2.0 relief innings, giving up five runs on six hits.

The Intimidators wrap up this 3-game series in Greensboro on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. against the Grasshoppers at NewBridge Bank Park. Left-hander Jeff McKenzie (1-1, 7.56) will start the series finale for Kannapolis against Greensboro's southpaw Sean Townsley (4-2, 2.64). The team returns home to CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Thursday, July 10, for a 4-game series against the Asheville Tourists.
