Sudbury Wolves News Release
The Sudbury Wolves were dealt a blow this week when they learned that 19-year-old forward MICHAEL MACDONALD will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks due to an upper body injury that the Thunder Bay native sustained in Tuesday's 3-2 shoot-out victory over the Soo Greyhounds.
MACDONALD was hit along the boards late in the first period of Tuesday's game and suffered an upper body injury that will require significant time to heal.
MACDONALD has been a solid addition to the Wolves since being acquired from the London Knights in November for a 2nd round pick in 2011 OHL Entry Draft.
The Wolves still have three 2nd round picks available to them in 2011.
"Michael has been playing very well of late and this injury is something that we don't need at this stage of the season" notes Wolves' Head Coach Trent Cull. "Now is the time for other forwards to step-up and help fill the void that Michael's absence creates on our top offensive lines. We have some good young players that are looking to play more minutes and I know they have the ability to get the job done."
MACDONALD was the hero for the Wolves last Saturday night when he scored a shorthanded goal with 2 seconds remaining in the game to give the Wolves a thrilling 7-6 victory over the Guelph Storm. MACDONALD also picked up an assist on JUSTIN SEFTON's goal in the Soo before exiting the contest with his injury.
MACDONALD was the Wolves' INDUSTRIAL ALLIANCE PLAYER OF THE MONTH award winner in December. MACDONALD has scored 11 goals and added 8 assists for 19 points in 24 games since joining the Wolves. MACDONALD has proven to be a very effective specialty team player both on the power play and on the penalty kill.
MACDONALD will be joined on the sidelines by BRODY SILK. The Iroquois Falls native is expected to be out of the line-up for at least ten days. MICHAEL SGARBOSSA is listed as day-to-day and a decision will be made on Friday by team doctors regarding his return to the Wolves' line-up. Wolves' forward ALEX RACINO is expected to return to the Wolves line-up on Friday night after missing the last three games.
The Wolves will face JOHN MCFARLAND and the SAGINAW SPIRIT Friday night at 7:30. SAGINAW is a top-10 ranked team in the country and have the #1 power play and #1 penalty kill units in the Ontario Hockey League. The SPIRIT sit in first place in the Western Conference and feature some of the highest scoring forwards in the OHL.
There are plenty of good seats still available for Friday's game. This is SAGINAW's one and only visit to Sudbury this season. SAGINAW's line-up also features former Wolves: BEN CHIAROT and PETER HERMENIGILDO.
