Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -In coordination with the Columbia Inferno, the Charlotte Checkers will add Troy Mann as a volunteer associate coach for the 2008-09 season.
Columbia was approved for voluntary suspension from the league for the upcoming season as they await the construction of their new facility. Mann, the head coach of the Inferno for the past two seasons, will join Checkers head coach and general manager Derek Wilkinson on the bench for the duration of the season.
"I want to thank our ownership group, Dr. Riber and Dr. Imbeau, for allowing me the opportunity to continue behind the bench for the upcoming season," said Troy Mann. "The Checkers are putting together a solid team and I am excited to help them reach their goal of the Kelly Cup. In addition, I look forward to returning behind the bench as head coach of the Inferno in the near future."
Mann has been the head coach and director of hockey operations of the Columbia Inferno for the past two seasons. Last season, he led the team to within one game of reaching the American Conference Finals, losing to the South Carolina Stingrays in the South Division finals. In his eleven years of playing professional hockey, the New Brunswick native is no stranger to the ECHL. He was the first player to sign with the Mississippi Sea Wolves in 1996. He also won the Kelly Cup in 1998-99 with the Sea Wolves. Other ECHL teams Mann has played for include the Hampton Road Admirals, Tallahassee Tiger-Sharks and the Jackson Bandits. He also saw action in the Central Hockey League, United Hockey League and Sweden. Mann finished his professional career with 542 points (255g - 287a) in 578 regular season games. Prior to turning to professional hockey, Mann graduated from the University of Toronto in 1993 with a Bachelor's degree in Physical and Health Education. Mann was a member of the Varsity Blues Hockey Program from 1989 - 1993.
"I would like to thank Mr. Kahn and the Inferno ownership for making this happen. We look forward to adding Troy to our team. He will be an important asset to us in our quest for the Kelly Cup."
The Checkers are getting ready for their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Opening night will take place on Halloween against the Augusta Lynx at a special 8 p.m. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are entering their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $396.
