Indy Fuel News Release
MOLINE, ILL. - The Indy Fuel (8-6-1-1) picked up a point but saw their six game winning streak come to an end Friday night, by virtue of a 4-3 shootout loss to the Quad City Mallards (9-6-0-1) at iWireless Center. With the victory, Quad City reclaims sole possession of fourth place in the Central Division standings, after the two teams began the night deadlocked at 17 points.
The Mallards accounted for the only two goals in the shootout to give the hometown team the extra point, after 65 minutes of back-and-forth play ended in a 3-3 draw. The loss was Indy's first since a 5-1 setback in Alaska back on Nov. 9. The Fuel close out a grueling stretch of four games in five nights with a Saturday-Sunday doubleheader against the Missouri Mavericks at Indiana Farmers Coliseum, beginning tomorrow at 7:35 p.m.
After a scoreless opening period, Indy's Matt Rupert opened the scoring 3:59 into the second with his third goal in as many games. Anthony Beauregard won a puck battle behind the Quad City net and found Rupert in the low slot, who tucked a one-timer under the crossbar to give the Fuel a 1-0 lead.
Mallard forward Michael Parks found the equalizer at 16:46 of the period, in what was the first of three goals scored in an eventful 3:03 span to end the frame. Right as an Indy penalty was expiring, a Mike Wilson point shot handcuffed goaltender Jake Hildebrand, and Parks was open to stuff home the rebound.
Reigning ECHL Player of the Week Alex Wideman restored Indy's advantage two minutes later, burying a rebound created by defenseman Jonathan Carlsson in transition. Wideman tacked on two assists to his team-leading ninth goal of the season, and has now recorded multiple points in each of his last five contests. The forward leads the Fuel with 18 points (9g, 9a), 12 coming during his current point streak.
But just over a minute later Quad City made it 2-2 on another rebound goal, this time with Jack Nevins benefitting from a Mike Monfredo point shot.
After tying the game with 11 seconds left in the second, the Mallards took their first lead of the night a minute into the third when Sam Warning beat Hildebrand over the glove from the left circle. Indy would tie the game at 5:17 when Lynch redirected a Wideman centering feed behind netminder C.J. Motte.
Alex Petan and Warning supplied the shootout goals for Quad City, handing the Fuel their first loss in the breakaway competition since the final game of the 2014-15 season.
Hildebrand stopped a season-high 41 shoots in the defeat as Indy was outshot by a 45-31 margin. Motte turned aside 28 shots plus two in the shootout to pick up his sixth win of the campaign.
The Fuel's penalty kill was solid once more, killing off four of four Mallards power play chances. Indy was scoreless on three opportunities of their own, each coming in short succession in the second period.
