Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Outfielders John Bowker, Mitch Jones and Alex Presley combined to go 7-for-12 with five runs scored and eight RBI to propel the Indianapolis Indians' offense to 10 runs on 12 hits as the Tribe went on to outslug the Norfolk Tides 10-6 on Tuesday night at Victory Field.
The victory improves the Indians' record to 59-59 on the season, while the loss drops the Tides' mark to 54-64 on the year. The win also ups Indianapolis' record against Norfolk to 2-4 on the season, as the Tribe has now evened the current four-game series at 1-1.
Norfolk jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on 3B Scott Moore's seventh home run of the season in the top half of the second inning. Moore's blast out to left field plated 1B Brandon Snyder, who reached base via an error with one out in the frame.
The Tribe then chipped away at the Tides lead in their half of the second when Bowker launched a solo shot for his first home run in an Indians' uniform, before the Tides regained their two-run edge with a single tally on a run-scoring double play grounder in the third.
With the score at 3-1 in Norfolk's favor in the bottom of the third inning, Indianapolis staged a two-out, three-run rally to take its first lead of the evening. DH Brandon Moss kicked off the scoring in the frame with a line drive single to center field to plate SS Pedro Ciriaco, before Jones evened the score at 3-3 with a base knock to right field one batter later.
The Indians then took their first advantage of the game at 4-3 when C Erik Kratz drew a bases loaded base on balls with two outs in the third. The Tribe's lead was short-lived, however, as Norfolk reclaimed the advantage at 5-4 when C Adam Donachie hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run on a ground ball down the left field line with no outs in the top of the fourth inning.
Indianapolis retook the lead for good when it plated four runs on four hits in the home half of the fourth frame. With runners standing at first and third with one out in the inning, CF Alex Presley lined his fourth triple of the season to the right-center field gap to plate both 2B Brian Friday and 3B Akinori Iwamura and give the Indians the 6-5 edge.
Following an out, Jones knocked home the Tribe's seventh run of the contest with a two-out RBI double to right field, before the Indians capped their four-run fourth on a run-scoring single by Bowker to take an 8-5 lead.
The Tribe would tack on two more runs in the home half of the sixth inning on a run-scoring groundout and Bowker's third RBI hit of evening to take a 10-5 lead, before Norfolk scratched across its final run of the contest on a two-out, RBI single by Matt Angle that plated Donachie and cut the Indians' lead to 10-6 in the top half of the eighth inning.
RHP Joe Martinez (5.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) earned his first win in an Indians' uniform after he allowed four earned runs in five innings of work, while Tides' starter Chris George (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) left the contest after being hit by a line drive in the bottom of the first inning. Norfolk reliever Cla Meredith (1.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) was strapped with his second loss of the year after allowing four runs on three hits in one inning of work.
In addition to the three-RBI efforts of both Bowker (3-for-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB) and Jones (2-for-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI), Presley (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 BB) also collected multiple RBI on the evening for the Tribe, while both Moore (2-for-3, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI) and Donachie (4-for-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI), who fell a triple short of the cycle, knocked more than one run for the Tides.
The Indians continue their four-game series against the Norfolk Tides on Wednesday, August 11 at 1:00 p.m. LHP Brian Burres is expected to get the start for the Tribe, while RHP Tim Bascom is the probable starter for the Tides.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and broadcast live on Comcast and Bright House Networks digital channel 81 with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show on WXLW-950 AM begins at 12:40 p.m.
Post-game quotes -- OF John Bowker
(on his first series at Victory Field)
"It has been a great experience so far. The team is very welcoming of me and (starter Joe Martinez) coming over from San Francisco. I really like the field and stadium here."
(on his homerun in the second inning)
"I have been working a lot in the cage to get my consistent timing done. In my first at-bat, I was 2-0 looking for the best pitch and I got it. Luckily, I didn't miss it."
