Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, and the Columbus Clippers split a doubleheader Tuesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse collected a 1-0 shutout win in game one of the doubleheader while Columbus took the second game 6-3. The Chiefs are now 8-10 against IL West opponents. The win in game two snapped a five-game losing streak for the Clippers.
Syracuse (60-57) scored the lone run of game one on a third-inning homer by Leonard Davis. The solo-homer was the rightfielder's 14th, the most on the team.
Jason Bergmann pitched a scoreless fifth inning to record his fifth win of the season. Adam Carr pitched the seventh for his third save since joining the team.
Jordan Zimmerman tossed four innings of one-hit ball in his second start with the Chiefs.
Yohan Pino went all six innings for Columbus, allowing three hits and one run. He struck out four and walked one.
The two teams combined for seven hits in the first game Tuesday night.
The Chiefs got out to an early 2-0 lead in game two of the doubleheader behind a pair of first inning hits from Boomer Whiting and Danny Espinosa.
Columbus (68-50) tied the score in the next half inning to make it 2-2. The first run came across on Jerad Head's long homerun over the center field wall. Head's solo-blast was followed by hits from Richard Martinez and Jose Constanza. Constanza's triple past Whiting in center brought home Martinez with the Clippers' second run of the night.
After the Chiefs regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the second, the Clippers picked up three runs in the third to open up a two-run advantage. Jared Goedert opened the inning by pounding a long fly ball to center. The ball cleared the wall for Goedert's team-leading 18th homer of the year and it tied the score at three. Drew Sutton broke the tie later in the frame with a one-out double down the left-field line. The hit scored Cord Phelps from first.
Andrew Kown fell to 1-3 with the Chiefs. He allowed seven hits and four runs in 2 1/3 innings.
Bryce Stowell earned the win for Columbus, his first of 2010. He tossed a perfect fourth inning. Vinnie Pestano hurled a perfect seventh inning to record his 10th save in 12 chances.
Jeremy Sowers started the game for the Clippers. He went three innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs.
The Chiefs take on the Clippers Wednesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium in game three of their four game series. Erik Arnesen (3-7, 4.08) will get the start for Syracuse against Columbus lefthander Eric Berger (0-0, 2.87). First pitch will be at 7:00.
