Indians Explode for 11-6 Win over Bats

September 2, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indians second baseman Hector Luna -- in just his third game with the Tribe -- went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, three RBI and three runs scored on Sunday night to lead Indianapolis to a rain-shortened 11-6 shellacking of the Louisville Bats at Louisville Slugger Field.

The game was called in the middle of the eighth inning due to heavy rain fall, which had began in the fifth inning and was causing puddles to form on the field.

Luna got the scoring started early on Sunday, launching a two-out solo home run in the top of the first inning. Following the longball, Luna's first with the Indians, it would be the seventh inning before the Louisville pitching staff was able to record a scoreless inning.

Indianapolis scored multiple runs in four straight innings starting with the second when 1B Matt Curry and SS Anderson Hernandez each recorded an RBI single. Three runs then scored in the third inning when CF Brandon Boggs drove in a run with a groundout before LF Jeff Larish picked up two RBI with a double to center. In his past three games, Larish has driven in eight runs.

The Indians scored two more runs in each the fourth and fifth inning. In the fourth, Luna doubled and then scored on 3B Yamaico Navarro's double before Larish drove home RF Dallas McPherson.

Starting pitcher Phil Irwin led off the fifth inning with a walk before eventually scoring on a Luna single along with newcomer C Ramon Cabrera, who had doubled. In his first career Triple-A game, Cabrera went 2-for-5.

The Tribe capped the scoring explosion with a lone run in the sixth inning when Larish led off the frame with a double before scoring on a single by Curry. By the time the dust had settled, a heavy rain was falling and Indianapolis held an 11-5 lead.

Surprisingly, the Indians had actually trailed early in the game when Louisville scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. 2B Cody Puckett scored the first Bats run of the game on a throwing error before back-to-back sacrifice flies by C Corky Miller and LF/RF P.J. Phillips put the home team up 3-1.

After the Indians tied the game in the second and took the lead for good in the top of the third, Louisville tallied single scores in each of the third, fifth and seventh inning but couldn't compile a rally strong enough to threaten the Indians. 1B Neftali Feliz had a hand in each of those runs for the Bats, picking up an RBI single in the third and an RBI double in the fifth before scoring the final run of the ballgame on a groundball single by Miller in the seventh.

Despite allowing five of Louisville's six runs, Irwin (5.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) picked up the win for Indianapolis, his third straight. In four starts for the Tribe, Irwin is 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA. In support of Irwin, RHP Bryan Morris (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) allowed one earned run in two innings of relief.

Louisville starter Todd Redmond (2.0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR) took the loss to fall to 8-11 on the season, 2-4 with the Bats. His relievers didn't fare much better as RHP James Allen (3.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 1 K) and LHP Will Ohman (2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K) combined to allow the last five Indianapolis runs. Only Bats RHP Jordan Smith (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) recorded a scoreless inning for either team, battling through torrential rain in the top of the eighth.

Neither team has named a projected starter for Monday's regular season finale. With the Bats looking to avoid a franchise-record 93rd loss, the first pitch of the game is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.

The game will be carried on WNDE 1260 AM-WFBQ-HD2, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 12:45 p.m.
