Charlotte Knights News Release

Brandon Short, just called up from AA-Birmingham Saturday, drove home the game-winning run with a tenth-inning, two-out drive in the left-centerfield gap, and the Knights pulled out a 2-1 extra-inning win over the Durham Bulls Sunday at Knights Stadium.

Andre Rienzo, just called up from AA-Birmingham on Thursday, made his first start for Charlotte and struck out ten batters in 6 2/3 innings of work. He allowed five hits and only walked two.

Rienzo sat down the first eight batters he faced and struck out three in a row at one point. He struck out six of the first ten he faced through three innings. Rienzo pitched out of a sixth-inning jam by striking out two more to give him nine to that point.

Durham Bulls starter, Chris Archer, was very effective. He did not surrender his first base hit until the bottom of the sixth when Carlos Sanchez singled sharply up the middle. Sanchez was bunted to second by Damaso Espino and scored on a hit-and-run grounder through third base by Drew Garcia to put Charlotte up 1-0.

The game was knotted at one in the top of the 7th when Charlotte centerfielder Trayce Thompson let Henry Wrigley's base hit to center get by his glove and the runners advanced to second and third base. Jesus Feliciano followed with a sacrifice fly to Thompson to score Leslie Anderson.

Another recent call-up from Birmingham, left-hander Santos Rodriguez, came on to get the last out of the 7th with the bases loaded. He also struck out two of three batters in the eighth. Anthony Carter (4-6, 4.60) pitched the final two innings to get the win.

Seth Loman, called up Thursday, led off the tenth with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tommy Manzella pinch-ran for him and Short won the game in walk-off fashion with his shot in the gap.

The series and season finale is a Labor Day matchup Monday at 2:15 p.m. The Knights will again honor the military as part of their Military Appreciation Series. The Knights (82-61) will send Matt Zaleski (6-6, 3.77) to the mound to face Lance Pendleton (8-6, 4.40) for Durham.
