Indians Claim Series Over Knights with 8-5 Win

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis offense scored at least one run in each of the final five innings of play, while five Tribe batters recorded two or more base hits as the Indians claimed an 8-5 victory and a 3-1 series win over the Charlotte Knights on Monday night at Victory Field.

The victory improves Indianapolis' record to 53-51 on the season, while the defeat drops Charlotte back to the .500 mark at 52-52. The win for the Indians also closes out their season series against the Knights with the Tribe holding a 6-2 record against Charlotte.

After the Knights jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out, run-scoring single by LF Buck Coats, the Indians responded with three runs of their own in bottom half of the frame.

3B Akinori Iwamura and CF Alex Presley kicked off the inning with back-to-back singles before a double by RF Brandon Moss put the Tribe on scoreboard and tied the contest at 1-1. Later an RBI groundout by 2B Jim Negrych gave the Indians their first lead of the contest at 2-1 and a two-out run-scoring single by IB Jonathan Van Every put the Tribe ahead 3-1.

Indianapolis' 3-1 lead was short-lived, however, as Charlotte evened the score at 3-3 with back-to-back solo home runs in the top of fifth inning. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, 2B Luis Rodriguez blasted his 12th home run of the season and fifth in his last five games, before RF Stefan Gartrell tied the game with his 20th shot of the year.

The Tribe reclaimed the lead with a single run in the bottom half of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Iwamura, before scoring two runs in the sixth and one in each of the seventh and eighth innings of play to take the decisive 8-3 lead.

Moss and Negrych collected back-to-back singles to start the sixth before the Indians scored two runs on a single to center field by Van Every. The single plated Moss from second base and a throwing error by C Tyler Flowers allowed Negrych to scamper home and give Indianapolis a 6-3 advantage.

The Tribe then scored a single tally on a solo home run by Presley with two outs in the seventh, before later scoring one more time on a sacrifice fly by LF Kevin Melillo in the eighth.

Charlotte threatened with two runs in the top half of the ninth inning, but RHP Jean Machi (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) retired Gartrell with runners on second and third base to preserve the Indians' victory.

Indians' LHP Brian Burres (7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO) earned his third win of the season after allowing three runs on six hits in seven strong innings of work, while Knights' starter Jeff Marquez (5.1 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) was strapped with his fifth loss of the year after he tied season-highs in both runs allowed (6) and hits (10).

In a contest that featured 24 total hits, five Indians' batters tallied multiple base knocks and the first six hitters in the Indianapolis lineup each drove in at least one RBI, while four Knights' batters collected at least two hits in the game with CF Alejandro De Aza (2-for-5, 1 3B, 2 RBI) recording the only multiple RBI evening for Charlotte.

Indianapolis now hits the road for 12 games in 13 days, beginning with a four game series with the Wild Card leading Syracuse Chiefs on Tuesday, July 27 at 7:00 p.m. RHP Charlie Morton is the expected starter for the Indians, while LHP Scott Olsen is the probable starter for the Chiefs.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
