Indianapolis defeats Durham, 5-2
August 3, 2004 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
GAME SUMMARY:
Indianapolis earned its second consecutive victory Tuesday night, defeating Durham, 5-2, as Jon Nunnally smashed a two-run triple in the eighth inning to help secure the victory.
Indianapolis starter Ben Hendrickson (9-2) and Durham starter Jason Standridge locked in a duel during the first three innings. The Tribe got to Standridge in the fourth inning for three runs, spearheaded by Alex Delgado's RBI single.
Durham bounced back with a single tally in the fifth when Brooks Badeaux pushed a bunt single down the third base line, scoring Robinson Cancel.
The Bulls cut the margin to 3-2 in the seventh inning when Matt Diaz homered off Tribe reliever Clint Weibl. In the same frame, Tribe third baseman Matt Erickson helped turn an inning ending double play on Charles Gipson's hot smash in the hole, preventing a further Bulls uprising.
Nunnally's triple into the left center field gap off Standridge was his first hit since being re-signed to a free agent deal on July 30. Ben Ford closed the game for the Tribe and earned his fourth save of the year.
Indianapolis improves to 47-63, while Durham falls to 59-49. The two teams meet Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m.
QUOTES:
Jon Nunnally on triple:
"Standridge did a good job changing speeds and locating his fast ball," said Nunnally. "You've got to wait him out and be patient early in the count. I got some pitches to do something with and caught a break. The whole team played well tonight."
Matt Erickson on defensive performance:
"For me, over my entire career, I have played third base, shortstop and second base," said Erickson. "To get to the big leagues and stay there, I need to be versatile. On the particular play in which we turned over the double play, I got excited that we made the play. I get just as excited making a defensive play than hitting a double."
NOTES:
Indianapolis is now 2-0 during the month of August.
The club will recognize the July Windsor Jewelers Player of the Month in a pre-game ceremony Wednesday.
