Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
Indianapolis, Indiana- The host Indiana Ice scored four straight third period goals on the way to a wild 7-5 win over the RoughRiders Friday night. The loss was the Riders' first of the season.
After Brandon Blandina buried a rebound at 2:38 of the third and T.J. Syner scored his second of the game from the slot at the 7:20 mark to turn a 5-3 Rider lead into a 5-5 tie, Nick Bailen scored what would prove to be the game winner while Indiana was on the power play when his shot from the left point was deflected past Rider goaltender Brady Hjelle (33 saves) midway through the third.
Greg Squires scored the key insurance goal for the Ice on a shorthanded breakaway with just over three and a half minutes remaining.
The Riders fell despite tying a team record by scoring five goals in the second period. The Riders entered the second down to 2-0 but would even the score within five minutes as Ben Lynch got Cedar Rapids on the scoreboard with a fine shorthanded individual effort at 2:09 and Kyle Flanagan converted a David Boehm centering pass for the Riders' second at 4:56.
Paul Phillips' drive from the top of the left wing circle gave the Riders their first lead of the night at 10:03, but just 15 seconds later the Ice's Brett Gwidt crashed the net to deadlock the game at three.
The Riders responded emphatically by scoring twice in just 21 seconds. Cedar Rapids was on the power play when Doug Jones drove a Tyler Thompson drop pass home from the slot at 12:47- the assist was Thompson's third of the period- and the Riders extended the lead to 5-3 when Casey Wellman's scored unassisted at 13:08. Wellman's goal chased Indiana starting goaltender Scott Darling (13 saves) from the game; replacement Matt Hoyle (14 saves) would prove considerably more difficult to solve.
It was the Ice who had gotten the early jump, grabbing a 2-0 first period lead by scoring twice in a span of just 34 seconds. Paul Carey's wrist shot from the slot opened the scoring 13:40 into the game. Indiana doubled the lead at 14:14 when Syner fired the puck home from the right wing circle.
