Charlotte Independence News Release
WILMINGTON, N.C. (Sept. 3, 2015) - The Charlotte Independence extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches with a 1-0 win over instate rivals Wilmington Hammerheads FC. It was a game of limited chances, but Bilal Duckett played a surprise role as hero for the Independence.
With four matches in the last two weeks and the loss of Mechack Jérôme to international duty, the Independence looked for depth in its squad. Caleb Calvert, Jack Metcalf, Raphael Cox, Jack Thompson and Marlon Hairston were handed starting roles in Thursday night's game. Andrew Ribeiro shifted to centerback and Hairston moved into midfield.
A rough first half for both sides developed into a physical game, and neither side was able to get on the board. Wilmington had the best chance of the half, when Aaron Wheeler took a pivoting shot from the top of the box, but it brushed off the post and out of play.
In the 60th minute, Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries made several offensive changes to his side, including the decision to sub in Jorge Herrera. The Colombian has been out with a calf injury since July 11, but made good on his return by providing the assist to the game winner just minutes after his introduction.
The invigorated Charlotte side began to dominate possession, and in the 72nd minute, Duckett capitalized on his chance. A simple corner routine, delivered by Herrera, found Duckett unmarked at the near post. He turned his header home with ease and reeled away to celebrate with his team.
The Independence now hold the fifth of six playoff spots with 36 points after 24 games. With four matches left to play, and only a point above the postseason cutoff, Charlotte will play host to the same Wilmington Hammerheads this Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm at Ramblewood Stadium.
