Iowa Barnstormers News Release
DES MOINES - The Iowa Barnstormers are deeply saddened to learn about the passing of legendary Iowa Barnstormers Head Coach John Gregory.
A huge part of the Barnstormers organization, John Gregory laid the foundation for Barnstormers football after being named the first ever Head Coach of the franchise. In 1995, the Iowa Barnstormers were set to make their Arena Football debut and Coach Gregory was tasked with building his team from the ground up. In doing so, he unknowingly left a high standard for years to come.
From 1995 to 2000, Gregory coached the Barnstormers to five division titles and led the team to two Arena Bowls. He is also credited with launching the careers of two of the greatest AFL quarterbacks in Aaron Garcia and Kurt Warner (who went on to be a Super Bowl MVP).
When the Iowa Barnstormers returned to Des Moines in 2008, after a 7 year hiatus, it was only fitting that John Gregory return to his roots as Head Coach, making him the first Head Coach of the franchise twice.
Coach Gregory is a huge part of the Iowa Barnstormers history and future as he set the tone for years to come. Words cannot express how much he will be missed by the Barnstormers community.
Our deepest condolences to the Gregory family during this very difficult time.
Services will take place on January 31, 2023 at the McLean Funeral Home in Gastonia, North Carolina (700 South New Hope Road). The Gregory family is requesting that attendees wear their favorite football jersey.
