Improbable Victory For Scorpions
November 2, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ AMARILLO, Tex.]-The Scorpions defied all odds in a came-from-behind for a 3-2 shootout victory Friday night. The win snapped the Scorpions three-game losing streak.
Konrad Reeder's shorthanded equalizer sent the Scorpions bench into a frenzy with just 12.8 seconds to go in regulation. Kevin Harvey was called for a five-minute charging penalty that carried into overtime. With the Scorpions down a goal and little time left in the third period, the officials escorted Harvey to the locker room.
With the game in overtime, the officering crew realized Harvey would be eligible to return to play with less than a minute left in the extra session. Unfortunately, Harvey did not get back to the ice in time since play was constant. The Scorps sent a player off the bench when the penalty expired, but were called for too many men. By rule a penalized player must enter the play from the penalty box. The minor penalty forced New Mexico to play the overtime shorthanded.
The Scorpions got redemption with a near perfect shootout. Reeder, Mitch Stephens and Tom Kotsopoulos all converted their chances. Mike Minard stood tall in net stopping three of the four Gorillas shooters to earn the victory.
After a scoreless first period the teams traded goals in the second frame. Harvey started an odd man rush with great defensive play in his own zone. After skating into the offensive zone, Harvey slammed on the brakes, waited for the passing lane to open up and delivered a perfect pass to Reeder. Reeder corralled the puck and shot it to the back of the net for the shorthanded goal.
The Gorillas came back late in the middle period. Seconds after a power play expired Chris Lipsett scored his third goal of the season tying the game at one after two periods of play.
New Mexico returns to home ice when they start a four game home stand against Rocky Mountain Saturday. It will be youth hockey night at the Star Center. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
