COLUMBUS, Ohio - A goal in the 2nd minute by the Columbus Crew put the Montreal Impact on its heels early in the game, and ultimately ended with a 2-0 score at Crew Stadium on Saturday night.
Things didn't start off well for the Impact as right winger Ethan Finlay scored just two minutes in. After a break down in midfield toward the left sidelines, midfielder Wil Trapp played a through ball down the right side that found Finlay, who went top shelf with a blast from a tight angle.
Finlay thought he found another in the 19th minute, breaking in alone on goal, but goalkeeper Evan Bush came out of his net to challenge the shooter near the top of his box, sliding to stop Finlay's blast.
The Crew created a number of chances in the first half, but lacked some finishing while the Impact had trouble finding its rhythm.
The bleu-blanc-noir found its legs and pushed back in the second half, but a PK was awarded to the Crew in the 58th minute when Jeremy Gagnon-Laparé was shown a yellow card for a foul in the box. Federico Higuain converted from the spot for his 11th goal of the season.
"It was very hard for me to understand the call on Jérémy," said Impact head coach Frank Klopas. "It was a tough game on the road and we gave an early goal. We had some good moments, but we lost the ball often and a little bit of momentum at times. Going down 2-0 on the road is difficult."
"I didn't have a chance to see the replay yet. Those things happen fast in a game," said Gagnon-Laparé. "They had more speed on a few occasions, but we came back in the second half with more energy. I still have a lot to learn in that position. They were attacking my side with two players, which was tougher to manage tonight."
"They scored when they had chances and we did not tonight," said midfielder Dilly Duka. "We create chances and got a PK but we were not lucky. We have the players to do well on the road as well. They played well and got the three points. We allowed the first goal very early from a tough angle, but we kept pushing."
The Impact's best chance came in the 61st minute when midfielder Calum Mallace slammed a dipping volley from 28 yards out that was destined for the far corner, but Crew goalkeeper Steve Clark soared backwards to push the ball over the bar.
The Crew could have had a third, but hit the post twice on the same play in the 87th minute. Tony Tchani broke in on goal, but hit the post with some pressure on his back from Felipe. The rebound fell to Bernardo Anor, who alone at the opposite post just needed to tap it in, but his shot found the uprights as well.
Then in stoppage time, a PK was called for the Impact when defender Tyson Wahl took down Issey Nakajima-Farran in the box, but striker Marco Di Vaio's powerful attempt was denied by Clark with a spectacular save.
Frank Klopas was ejected from the game in the second half and will have to serve an automatic one-game suspension as a result.
The Impact will play its next game on Sunday, October 5 at 5pm in Chicago (TVA Sports, TSN Radio 690) and will return to Stade Saputo on Saturday, October 11 at 4pm versus the New England Revolution. Excellent tickets remain via ticketmaster.ca.
