Idaho Takes Game 1, 3-1
April 14, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Allen Americans News Release
Allen, TEXAS - With the regular season behind us, the Allen Americans began their quest for four straight championships on Thursday night. The Allen Event Center was the site of Game 1 between the Americans and the Idaho Steelheads. Idaho took the upper-hand in the series, winning 3-1.
With Jake Hildebrand starting in net for Allen, it was a stroke of misfortune that broke the ice, as Idaho found the net off of an own goal. While trying to clear a sitting puck out from behind Hildebrand, David Makowski shot it into the back of Hildebrand, which bounced back and into the net. Andre Bouvet-Morrissette was given credit for the goal.
With only three minutes gone in the second period, the Steelheads expanded their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Shawn Boutin, set up by a backdoor feed from Emil Molin.
Late in the second period, we could perhaps call it karma. A very lucky goal opened the scoring for the Steelheads, similar to the first goal of the Kelly Cup Playoffs for the Americans. Making it 2-1, Gary Steffes was the beneficiary of a puck that bounced off of the boards behind the net. The puck landed on top of the net, was batted off and into the crease by an Idaho defenseman, and right into the lap of a waiting Steffes. He made no mistake, cutting the Idaho lead in half right before the second intermission.
With Allen having hopes of carrying over momentum into the third period off of the late Steffes goal, Idaho had different plans. An early high sticking penalty from Dyson Stevenson lead to a Power Play goal from Tommy Fallon, extending the Steelhead lead to 3-1.
Vincent Arseneau tried to pick up the Americans spirits in the third period, as he dropped the gloves with Zach Bell in a spirited bout.
Allen didn't necesarilly struggle offensively. Idaho netminder Phillipe Desrosiers saw 37 shots in Game 1, but stood tall against a persistent Americans offensive attack.
