Idaho Battles Back for Showcase Win Over Fort Wayne

OREM, Utah Jan. 6, 2009 - The Idaho Stampede overcame a 25-point deficit to upend the Fort Wayne Mad Ants 99-96 in the first game of the second day of action at the 2009 NBA D-League Showcase held at the McKay Events Center.

Coby Karl led the Stampede with 20 points and 13 assists, eight of which came in the game's final period. Six other Idaho players scored in double figures, including Ernest Scott (17), Jason Ellis (13), Lance Allred (11), and Brent Petway, Lanny Smith, and Mildon Ambres (10 each).

The last five minutes of the game saw three lead changes and three ties, including at 93 with 1:50 to play. Idaho took a three-point lead, 96-93 with 1:20 on the clock when Ernest Scott sunk a three-point bomb. The Stampede never looked back, despite trading fouls with the Mad Ants, who came within one point. The win was sealed by a Brent Petway breakaway dunk with 13 seconds to play to bring the score to 99-96.

The Mad Ants came out strong in the first two stanzas, coasting to a 32-14 lead after one and extending it to 20, 59-39, at the end of two on the back of Chris Hunder's 11 first half points.

Tides changed in the second half, though, with the Stampede charging back in the third quarter to outscore the Mad Ants 29-21 to cut the deficit to 12 at the end of three before tying the game at 88 5:58 to play in regulation and taking their first lead of the game, 92-89 with under five to play. "I think we had a tough start coming out with Jermareo for the fist time, but then we had a great surge in the second half," said Idaho's Coby Karl. "Defensively we played really well and we had some guys off the bench come in and do some good things. It felt good to get the win"

Fort Wayne was led by Chris Hunder's 20 points and Alex Acker's 18 points during an assignment from the Detroit Pistons.

Idaho, 12-4, return to 2009 NBA D-League Showcase action on Thursday, Jan. 8 when they face the Tulsa 66ers while Fort Wayne, 5-9, continue their Showcase run on Wednesday, Jan. 7 when they play the Reno Bighorns.
