Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Corpus Christi goaltender Kris Tebbs made 33 saves as the IceRays ended the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs' seven-game winning streak with a 3-1 win on Tuesday night at the CenturyTel Center. Jeremy Leroux notched both of the first two goals of the night for Corpus Christi, who won in Bossier City for the first time since February 15, 2005.
Travis Clayton scored the only goal of the game for the Mudbugs, who took a 1-0 lead early in the first period, but failed to find the back of the net again. Ken Carroll started the game and played the first period, but Jon Horrell replaced him between the pipes to start the second period and played the rest of the game.
The Mudbugs scored the game's first goal on a rebound just 1:16 into the contest after Neil Clark flew into the offensive zone a sent a backhand shot towards the net. Kris Tebbs stopped that shot, but the rebound bounced right to Travis Clayton, who was standing behind the goal line when he banked the puck off Tebbs and into the net to make it 1-0 for the âBugs. Just a few minutes later though, Corpus Christi tied it on the powerplay when Leroux's long shot from the point bounced off Carroll and into the net. That powerplay goal for the IceRays broke a streak of 49 consecutive successful penalty kills for the Mudbugs and tied the game at one after 20 minutes.
Bossier-Shreveport got many more offensive chances in the second, but couldn't solve Tebbs despite a 20-11 shot advantage in the period. Corpus Christi then took the lead late in the period when Leroux jumped into a long passing lane to steal the puck, then broke into the offensive zone and beat Jon Horrell to the stick side put the IceRays on top 2-1 after two periods.
The Mudbugs pushed hard in the third and had plenty of opportunities to tie the game. Justin Quenneville was whistled for a five-minute high-sticking major that gave the âBugs an extended powerplay, and they even had a brief 5-on-3 thanks to a Chris Mei penalty. Still, Bossier-Shreveport never solved Tebbs again to get even in the contest. Chris Greene's late empty-netter provided the final 3-1 margin.
The Mudbugs finished 0 for 6 on the powerplay, while Corpus Christi was 1 for 3. The âBugs outshot the IceRays 34-29 in total. Horrell was tagged with the loss after making 18 saves on 19 shots and Carroll stopped eight of nine first period shots before leaving the game. Tebbs moved above .500 with the 33-save winning effort, improving his record to 16-15-3.
Next up for the Mudbugs is the conclusion of their longest homestand of the season on Friday night against the Tulsa Oilers. The âBugs will be looking to finish the season 8-0 against Tulsa and start a new winning streak before heading to Arizona for a pair of games next weekend. Opening faceoff for the Mudbugs vs. the Oilers is set for 7:05 pm at the CenturyTel Center. Individual tickets are available through Ticketmaster at 318-741-9700 and group and flex ticket packages are on sale through the Mudbugs office at 318-752-BUGS.
