Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Southaven, Miss. - Despite getting out-shot 43-18, the Rocky Mountain Rage still managed to defeat the Mississippi RiverKings 4-3 in a shootout at the DeSoto Civic Center. Colt King and Daymen Rycroft each had three points, and Scott Reid made 40 saves to lead the Rage to their first victory over the RiverKings this season.
Mississippi jumped out to an early lead 7:23 into the first period when Joe Markusen scored off a wrap-around. Rycroft answered back in the second for Rocky Mountain when he re-directed a shot from King at 11:33, and the teams were tied at one through 40 minutes.
The âKings took their second lead of the game in the first minute of the third period. King coughed up the puck in his own zone, and Matt Pierce eventually made him pay 47 seconds into the frame. But King atoned for his mistake at 6:45 when he fired home his 23rd of the year to tie the game at two. Rycroft then gave the Rage their first lead of the evening at 9:40 when he rifled a slapshot into the upper right-hand corner, tying King for the team goal-scoring lead with his 23rd of the season.
Rocky Mountain successfully protected its one-goal edge until running into penalty trouble in the final minutes of regulation. With Mississippi on a two-man advantage, Jeff Alcombrack fired a slapshot past Reid to square the game at three with 2:49 remaining.
Reid was outstanding throughout the entire contest, though. King and Rycroft scored on the club's only two shots of the third period as the Rage netminder carried his teammates to overtime by stopping 19 of 21 in the final frame and 40 of 43 on the night.
Following a scoreless overtime, King and Simon Watson tallied in the shootout while Reid stopped four of five RiverKings shooters. Watson was given credit for the game-winner in the tie-breaker, giving him eight goals in the last seven games and extending what is now an eight-game point streak.
With the win, the Rage again reach a season-high five games above .500 for the sixth time this year at 25-20-4. Rocky Mountain continues to hold the Northern Conference's fifth and final playoff position, six points behind the fourth-place Oklahoma City Blazers.
The Rage are now 3-3-0 on their seven-game road trip which concludes on Friday against the Wichita Thunder at the Kansas Coliseum. All of the live play-by-play action can be heard exclusively on ESPN Radio 1600 beginning with the pre-game show at 5:55 p.m. MST. There is no CHL Network coverage from the Coliseum.
Rocky Mountain then plays its only home game during the month of February on Sunday when the club faces-off against the RiverKings for the third time in four games at Broomfield Event Center at 3:05 p.m. Having avenged a 5-1 loss to Mississppi on Sunday, Rocky Mountain is now 1-2-0 against the âKings this year.
